Tech Industry Employers Step Up Activity For Future Hiring

2022 kicked off the beginning of some tough times for employees in the tech industry. Unfortunately, the tough times are going deep into 2023.

Tens of thousands of Tech workers even in the biggest names in the industry like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft have fallen victim to layoffs. According to TechCrunch, these layoffs follow a common script. Affected companies cite the macroeconomic environment and a need to find discipline on a tumultuous path to profitability.

As reported by Layoffs.fyi, the total number of tech layoffs so far in 2023, stands at 168,243. This, therefore, means that the 2023 layoffs after three months have exceeded 2022’s value. Scary stat I know.

However, it’s not all bad from a general perspective at least. As Market Watch reports, despite the massive layoffs that have been experienced in the industry, tech companies are hiring. And A LOT, for that matter.

In a tech jobs report compiled by CompTIA, job postings for tech positions were almost 316,000 in the month of March. To put this into context, this is the highest this tally has been in the past seven months.

CompTIA’s chief research officer Tim Herbert in an interview with MarketWatch said, “The headline focus on Big Tech overshadows the enormous base of the tech pyramid. Tech services, dominated by small and midsize companies, have filled the gap in hiring.”

CompTIA also disclosed that in the month of March, tech jobs increased by 197,000. However, this is not a figure that is expected to be true for March only. As the report suggests, employers have stepped up activity for future hiring.

Why Is The Job Market Booming Despite The Layoffs?

As Kathryn Edwards, a labor economist and policy consultant told ABC News, “Tech is omnipresent in our lives so it feels like it should be omnipresent in our labor market, but that’s not necessarily the case”

While companies in the tech industry are laying off employees as a result of low revenue growth, other industries and sectors are soaring. ABC News reports that according to Government data, there is robust hiring in the service sector.

Government, healthcare, and retail are some top sectors that are spearheading the hiring surge which included tech positions in these sectors and industries.
