Social Media is ‘Manipulative’, Jenna speaks up

Let’s face it; social media is one of the most controversial topics anyone could ever discuss. We have those that are extremely opposed to social media and are not willing to engage, on the other hand there are those who give their a hundred and fully engage, no boundaries, then there are those who wish to engage but have a few dislikes about social media, neither hot nor cold.

The rising star of the Netflix show Wednesday, Jenna Ortega recently had a sit-down interview for Variety’s Actors on Actors series with actress Elle Fanning from the show, The Great. The two had a deep dive on different issues both heavy and light.

One of the most interesting topics discussed include the one on the dark side or realities of social media. Social media conversations are usually lengthy and chaotic, however the two Hollywood stars managed to put it into simple words, ‘manipulative’ and ‘toxic.’

Jenna heavily opined that social media leads to one having one’s vulnerability exploited and distorted while people prey on and twist their own truths. The Wednesday star has claimed that she frequently finds herself in ‘trouble’ because of her genuineness.

She has always wanted to be genuine and honest with her fans but it is not possible with how social media is and people end up taking advantage of her “I want people to be able to watch movies and also get to know the people behind the camera and feel like they’re attainable or realize that people should never be put on a pedestal.”

“The more I’ve been exposed to the world in a sense, people prey on that and take advantage of that. And they see your vulnerability and twist it in a way that you don’t always expect. It’s so, so strange. Sorry, I didn’t mean to do this,” Jenna added while crying.

The former Disney Channel child star, has often found herself in situations that have led people to attack her and call her sorts of names. For one, she was called entitled and toxic for changing a few lines on her show, Wednesday; the other time was when fans attacked her for disclosing she had COVID-19 while filming the famous Wednesday dance.

“It’s such a hard thing to balance. Because how do you be honest without jeopardizing your own health and safety? It’s very easy to feel almost out of control of things,” she said. “Which is why it’s so important for people to get off the phone.”

Jenna has been quite short in terms of posting on social media and now we know why, it has everything to do with how people perceive and interpreted her content which is understandable. She therefore finds it difficult to post on her pages.

Indeed, this conversation between Jenna and Elle serves as a compelling reminder of the darker side that lies beneath the glitz and glamour in addition to shedding light on the problems that celebrities experience on a personal level on social media.
