Seine Cleanup Success? Mayor Hidalgo’s Swim to Demonstrate Water Quality

In anticipation of the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympics, Paris is taking a bold step to showcase the safety of its renowned Seine River. Reports from DW show that in a bold move to demonstrate the cleanliness of the Seine River, Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris is set to take a dip in its waters on Wednesday.

This action is intended to reassure both local residents and international visitors that the river is safe for the open-water swimming events. In the past, swimming in the Seine River was prohibited for more than a century due to severe pollution. However, in preparation for the Paris Games, substantial measures have been taken to improve the river’s water quality and ecological conditions.

The French government and local authorities allocated a substantial budget of $1.5 billion to clean up the Seine River. This extensive effort is geared toward ensuring that the Seine meets the safety standards necessary for hosting the Olympic swimming events.

According to Hidalgo’s office, “On the eve of the Games, when the Seine will play a key role, this event represents the demonstration of the efforts made by the city and the state to improve the quality of the Seine’s waters and the ecological state of the river.”

Mayor Anne Hidalgo’s planned swim in the Seine River was originally set for last month but had to be postponed due to reports indicating elevated levels of fecal matter in the water. This delay sparked online conversations and even inspired playful memes, with social media users humorously likening Hidalgo’s swim to Dobby, the house-elf from the Harry Potter series.

Tony Estanguet, the Chief Paris Games organizer, and Marc Guillaume, the top security officer in greater Paris, will join Mayor Anne Hidalgo in the swim. Their participation highlights the importance of this event and the collaborative endeavor to ensure a successful and safe Olympic experience.

As the Paris Games draw near, the extensive cleanup of the Seine River and the planned swim by Mayor Hidalgo and other officials underscore the city’s commitment to Olympic preparation. Paris aims to showcase the improvements made to its iconic river, alleviating any remaining concerns about water quality.
