Scotland’s New Hate Crime Law Causes Chaos: Police Overwhelmed with Spam Calls

The Hate Crime and Public Order Act came into force on 1st April 2024 after being passed by the Scottish Parliament. However, the new act has not been well received by various groups with far-right and Neo-Nazi agitators encouraging their followers to make aggravating complaints with the aim of overwhelming police systems. According to the Observer, a famous figure who is a member of England’s nationalist movement is one of the people encouraging his followers to send messages to the police. The purpose of this move is to overwhelm the police and finally give up on the whole system. 

The act incorporated new measures that are aimed at tackling harm that is usually caused by prejudice and hatred. One of the new offenses in the act is “threatening or abusive behaviour which is intended to stir up hatred” based on age, religion, disability, transgender identity, and sexual orientation.

This attack on the law comes after the new act faced a lot of criticism barely a week after it was enforced with critics claiming that it will curtail the right to free speech. Critics have also questioned why sex was omitted from the list of protected characteristics the law protects. Some of the public figures who are against the act include Elon Musk, J.K Rowling, and Joe Rogan.

The Scottish government has defended the law saying that the law will protect free speech and victims that have been targets of hate crime. On why sex was omitted from the law, the government claims that there is a separate bill on misogyny in the works.
