Russian Company Sberbank Launches GigaChat, an AI Model Intended To Rival The Best Of Them
Sberbank is a state-owned banking and financial services company in Russia. On Monday, 24th April 2023, the company announced that they are joining the AI race with a chatbot of their own known as GigaChat.
Since ChatGPT took the world by storm after its launch in late November 2022, there has been a flurry of entries into the booming AI sector. Gigachat is the latest in a long line that includes Google’s Bard and Alibaba’s Tongyi Qianwen. As per reports, there are more on the way including Elon Musk’s much anticipated and publicized X.AI.
Gigachat is currently not available to the public but can be accessed through an invite-only testing mode. According to the Russian lending company, Gigachat is different from the other AI models in that it can converse more intelligently in Russian.
Much like the already available AI models, Gigachat can respond to users’ questions, carry out a conversation, write a program code to develop software, and also create texts and images based on descriptions by the user.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Western countries have cut their exports to the country as a protest of the actions. Severe sanctions have also been imposed on said exports which include technology. To this end, many companies in the country have made strategic investments in an effort to reduce or at least mitigate the country’s reliance on Western exports.
These investments include the tech industry where Sberbank has invested heavily and GigaChat is a “fruit” of these sound investments. The AI model is a product of Sberbank’s SberDevices. SberDevices is a smart device manufacturer that was founded as a subsidiary of Sberbank in 2019.
During the development of Gigachat, Sber’s AI teams worked closely with Moscow’s Artificial Intelligence Research Institute. I guess being state-owned has its perks after all huh?
