Beer lovers can celebrate the new study by the renowned Danish shipping and logistics company, DFDS. The survey named Prague as Europe’s second-best destination for beer. This annual report was released earlier in April 2024.
According to the DFDS study, Prague scored 83 out of 100 points. Madrid, Spain’s capital topped the ranking with 85 points. Vienna in Austria, Budapest in Hungary, and Thessaloniki in Greece rounded out the top five.
The report involved Europe’s 70 most popular destinations. Additionally, 8,000 bars and pubs, and over 40,000 Google reviews were analyzed. In the survey, four factors were considered. That includes beer quality, price, social media buzz, and the quality and quantity of bars and pubs. A possible score of 100 points based on the four factors was set for each city.
Czechia was represented by both Prague and Brno on the ranking. This cemented the country as a top beer destination in Europe and beyond. Brno was in 13th place, a tie with Amsterdam. Celebrated beer destinations like Brussels in Belgium and Berlin in Germany were behind Prague. They secured seventh and ninth spots respectively.
Prague’s vibrant beer atmosphere received recognition for the long-standing brewing tradition. The city boasts over 35 breweries. Pilsner Urquell was noted as a global trailblazer for Pilsner recipes.
“When you go to Prague, it’s all about the Pilsner. It’s what all the locals drink, and most places only serve this, which you can get either light or dark,” explained beer expert Differ Shaun Hill, speaking to DFDS.
Prague Scored Highest For Beer Affordability
Among the four factors considered for Prague analysis, the Czech capital scored the highest in beer affordability. Prague was also rated high in social media buzz. This was done by evaluating the average total number of video views from a sample of TikTok videos. The videos were centered on each city’s beer scene.
When it came to beer quality, Prague didn’t appear popular. It scored 65 points. According to the study, Brno received 85 points noting higher quality beer.
Commenting about Prague’s beer scene, DFDS encourages visitors to explore the city’s historic breweries. “It’s served (referring to Pilsner) with a huge head of foam and it’s great. The best place to try it is U Zlatého Tygra (The Golden Tiger),” added Shaun Hill. This location is a traditional Pilsner beer hall offering a unique atmosphere in the heart of old Prague.
Other Prague iconic breweries recognized by the logistics company include the Strahov Monastery Brewery. This 17th-century brewery is nestled in an ancient monastery, near Prague Castle. It prides itself in a restaurant & courtyard.
Another shoutout was for U Fleků. It is the city’s oldest brewery that has survived over five centuries. The historic venue is known for traditional local dishes, beer, and live music. There is also an outdoor seating area that visitors appreciate about the facility.
Prague’s lively beer scene cements its place among global beer destinations. Visitors worldwide keep flocking to its breweries, historic pubs, and more venues. Check out some of the biggest 2024 beer festivals.
