Prague’s landmarks tours is set to slightly change this summer as the iconic Powder Gate undergoes extensive repairs. A symbol of the city’s rich history, the 15th-century Gothic landmark will be shrouded in scaffolding until October 2024. The tower’s facade and gallery railing are set to be renovated. As one of Prague’s most beloved monuments, it will get some new breath of life.
A Much-Needed Makeover
The Powder Gate’s current state has been described as “disastrous” by city officials. Years of weather damage and long overdue repairs from the 1960s and 70s have taken their toll on the historic structure. The black coating, added half a century ago to hide mismatched stonework, will be removed to reveal the tower’s original brown color from its 1880s Neo-Gothic renovation.
“We must care for Prague’s historical monuments,” says Jiri Pospisil, Deputy Mayor for Culture and Tourism. “They are symbols of our city and a legacy from our predecessors.”
What Visitors Can Expect
While the scaffolding may disappoint some tourists hoping for the perfect photo, the renovation offers a unique opportunity to witness history in the making.
Frantisek Cipro, Chairman of Prague City Tourism, reassures visitors: “The repairs will not significantly restrict visitor traffic. Our goal is to have the work finished by the end of October.”
A Glimpse into Prague’s Past and Future
The Powder Gate’s renovation is more than just a cosmetic update. Experts will study the building’s history up close using laser scanning. Original Gothic stones from later additions, providing valuable insights for future preservation efforts.
As the scaffolding goes up and work begins, both locals and tourists are encouraged to embrace this unique moment in the Powder Gate’s long history. While it may not be picture-perfect this summer, the promise of a beautifully restored landmark on the horizon gives everyone something to look forward to.
