The picturesque streets of Prague may see fewer tourists this summer as the cost of visiting the Czech capital increases. Since June 11, 2024, travellers from outside the European Union face higher fees for Schengen visas, which allow entry to 27 European countries, including the Czech Republic.
The European Union has raised Schengen visa fees by 12% due to rising inflation in member states. Adult travelers now pay €90 (about 2,200 Czech crowns) for a visa, up from €80. Children aged 6 to12 pay €45, an increase from €40.
The EU says the fee increase will help cover the rising costs of processing visa applications. Consequently, the additional staff that these income would allow, will speed up the application process.
Despite the increase, EU officials claim Schengen visa fees are still lower than those charged by other countries. For example, a visa for the UK visa starts at £115 (about 3,300 Czech crowns).
Prague’s tourism industry is watching closely to see how these changes will affect visitor numbers. “We had just started to recover from the drop in tourism due to the pandemic,” says Mr. Svoboda, owner of a souvenir shop near Charles Bridge. “Now we’re worried this might slow things down again.”
However, not everyone thinks the impact will be significant. Martin Cerny, a local hotel manager, believes, “People who really want to visit Prague will still come. Some people even argued that the city’s beauty and history are worth the extra cost.”
However, there are still ways to save money when visiting Prague for budget-conscious travellers. Many of the city’s best attractions, like walking across Charles Bridge or exploring the Old Town Square, are free.
As Prague adjusts to this new reality, both locals and potential visitors are adapting their plans. Whether you’re a traveller budgeting for your next European adventure or a Prague resident working in tourism, it’s important to stay informed about these changes.
The full effects of the visa fee increase remain to be seen. Prague’s charm and rich culture continue to make it a must-visit destination, that is a given.
