One World 2024 Prague opens in 48 cities across the Czech Republic featuring Oscar-winning documentaries like 20 Days in Mariupol.
Lovers of human rights-themed films will be treated to the 26th edition of the One World International Human Rights Documentary Film Festival. It will take place in 48 cities around the country. The event will run from Wednesday, 20 March to 21 April 2024.
In Prague, this festival will run from 20 March to 28 March 2024. Afterward, from 2 April to 21 April, the festival will host screenings across different districts of the city.
The fictional films category is the festival’s new theme to look out for
The festival is acclaimed for showing films grouped by themes into various sections. Over the years, the festival has featured 7 sections including, Identities, Structures of Power, The Middle East, and Ecosystems. Also, Searching for Freedom, On the Edge of Maturity, and Communities categories.
This year’s festival will feature a new category known as fictional films. Festivalgoers can expect an enriched event with this theme. Like in the past, visitors will enjoy discussion panels that bring together hosts and hostesses from all over the world.
The 2024 Academy Award-winning film for Best Documentary will be shown
Among the many films that the festival will show in the different categories will be the 20 Days in Mariupol documentary. This film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature Film in 2024.
The film captures the early Russian invasion of Ukraine, forcing a challenge on Ukrainian journalists. Though the journalists desire to cover the war events, they remain trapped in the besieged city of Mariupol.
Since 1999, the festival has remained one of a kind in the world
The first One World Festival was held in 1999. Since then organizers have named it the most important event of its kind in the world. In 2007 UNESCO gave it an honorable mention for human rights education.
