British rock band Oasis made headlines this week with the announcement of their reunion tour, but the highly anticipated ticket-buying process has been met with frustration and complaints from eager fans.
The general sale for tickets to the band’s 17-date tour went live on Saturday at 9 a.m. GMT, triggering a predictable frenzy among fans. However, reports that have surfaced on social media indicate inflated prices, long waits, and error messages from ticketing company Ticketmaster, leaving many concert-goers disheartened.
City councillor Darragh Moriarty from Dublin took to social media to express his dismay, highlighting an “In Demand Standing Ticket” priced at a staggering €415.50 ($459.61) plus fees, and questioning the fairness of the pricing.
In response to the backlash, a Ticketmaster spokesperson clarified that the company does not set ticket prices, emphasising that promoters and artists are responsible for determining ticket costs. Ticketmaster’s official website further explains that ticket prices can be fixed or market-based, with market-based tickets labelled as “Platinum” or “In Demand.”
As frustrated fans took to social media to vent about their experiences, Stephen Lowell of London shared his ordeal of waiting for five hours only to receive a message stating, “Your session has been suspended.” Despite this, Ticketmaster maintained that their site did not crash, raising further concerns about the ticket-buying process.
The upcoming tour, set to commence on July 4, is expected to be one of the biggest live moments and hottest tickets of the decade, according to Ticketmaster. A presale was also made available to selected applicants, with Oasis cautioning that ticket allocation is not guaranteed, further adding to the anxiety surrounding ticket availability.
This episode is not the first time Ticketmaster has faced public scrutiny over ticket sales for high-demand concerts. In November 2022, the company and its parent company Live Nation Entertainment drew criticism for their handling of the immensely popular Taylor Swift Eras Tour.
The frustrations surrounding the ticket-buying process for large concert events continue to demonstrate the challenges faced by fans in securing tickets for highly anticipated shows, as ticketing companies navigate the complexities of demand, pricing, and allocation.
