Eddie Howe’s men will be in line for a huge payday if they achieve a top-four finish

Newcastle’s players and coaching staff will be rewarded handsomely if the Magpies finish their outstanding season by qualifying for the Champions League.

Eddie Howe’s side are currently in a great position to return to Europe’s elite competition for the first time since 2003 after a statement-like 6-1 victory over top-four rivals Tottenham on Sunday. Newcastle is presently third in the Premier League rankings, tied on points with fourth-placed Manchester United, but having played one fewer game.

But Newcastle’s thrashing of Tottenham puts them six points ahead of Spurs in fifth place, with a game in hand and a far superior goal difference. As a result, Newcastle fans are growing increasingly convinced that Howe and company can finish the job in their remaining seven games, and that they will be richly rewarded for doing so.

According to reports, the club’s owners, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), have already negotiated large bonus clauses for each player and member of the coaching staff if the Magpies return to European football. Some clubs, such as Manchester United, include an automatic 20% or 25% pay increase for reaching the Champions League, whereas Newcastle’s salary increases are done on an individual basis.

Before the start of the 2022-23 season, PIF and senior players agreed on the club’s annual bonus sheet. It also offers additional incentives for the playing squad and staff for reaching particular campaign objectives.

Howe’s players have already achieved more than was anticipated of them and should still finish in the Europa League, despite needing to avoid relegation last season. However, a spectacular turnaround has the Magpies flying high, and going 5-0 up in an unforgettable 21 minutes on Sunday was indicative of their rise.

Within two minutes, Jacob Murphy put Newcastle up 1-0, before Joelinton’s strike and Murphy’s second goal of the game made it three. Alexander Isak’s quick-fire double made it five before Tottenham talisman Harry Kane hit back for Spurs in the second half, only for Callum Wilson to restore the enormous advantage.

Talk of the Champions League was unavoidable post-match, with midfield maestro Bruno Guimaraes admitting: “Of course, we are thinking about it, but let’s take it step by step. We can do it, of course, but there are still seven games to go. We started this way, now let’s finish the season this way.”

“We should not be shy to say that we want to play Champions League,” said defender and captain Kieran Trippier. Today’s game was crucial, and we needed the three points. We have another game coming up, but this club and stadium would be alive and well if we could bring Champions League football here.”
