David Moyes handed stay of execution by West Ham despite Newcastle’s drubbing
Despite West Ham United’s dreadful run continuing with Wednesday evening’s humiliating defeat to Newcastle, David Moyes retains the support of the club’s board.
The Hammers were thrashed 5-1 at the London Stadium by Eddie Howe’s men, who ran riot. The defeat extended West Ham’s poor season, and they now lie on goal difference narrowly outside the relegation zone.
Because of the club’s terrible domestic form this season, supporters have been calling for Moyes’ dismissal throughout the season, and those calls have only grown stronger in the aftermath of the Newcastle defeat. Nonetheless, it appears that the Scot will remain in his post for the time being.
For the moment, there are no preparations for a managerial change at the London Stadium and Moyes will oversee this weekend’s clash with Fulham as normal. Speaking after full-time against Newcastle, the former Man Utd boss confirmed he still had the support of the club hierarchy and reiterated his commitment to the Hammers.
“No doubt [the board] are behind me,” Moyes told Sky Sports, “but if you lose badly like that as a manager, you’re always in danger.”
Later in his post-match press conference, he said, “I’m a big lad, I’ve left jobs before, and if this one happens, well, then I’d have to go with that if that’s the case. Supporters have their say, but it’s football. It’s difficult because they want to see performances, which have been uneven this season. We need to keep the positivity. I’m trying to keep the boys in there. I’ve been at West Ham before where you can feel negativity, with this group of boys that’s not happening. I think a run and we can get ourselves out of it.”
With his return to the London Stadium in 2019, Moyes has been in charge. Since then, he has led the Hammers to sixth and seventh place in the Premier League, as well as the Europa League semi-finals last season.
He has little over a year left on his West Ham deal. If the club changes its mind, Moyes will join Brendan Rodgers and Graham Potter as Premier League managers who have lost their jobs in the last week.
