Melodies Bridged Cultures at Türkiye-Japan Centennial Concert

On an enchanting evening in Istanbul, the melodies of Western classical music intertwined with the celebration of 100 years of diplomatic relations between Turkiye and Japan. The Pera Museum hosted a special concert titled “From Beethoven to Prokofiev: A Musical Journey” on May 4th, offering an auditory exploration that transcended boundaries.

The Concert of Cultural Connections

The concert formed part of the “Intersecting Worlds: Envoys and Painters” exhibition at the Pera Museum. A selection of orientalist paintings were brought in to provide the perfect backdrop to the event.  The cross-cultural connections through the universal language of music was the highlight.  

Violinist Mina Aoki-Girardelli and pianist Çagdas Ozkan took center stage, presenting a meticulously curated program that spanned centuries of violin repertoire. The performance was a meeting of musical styles and eras. From the classical genius of Ludwig van Beethoven to the virtuosic flair of Pablo de Sarasate.

The Suna and Inan Kıraç Foundation, through the Pera Museum, has long championed the cultural bridge between Turkiye and Japan. The museum has hosted numerous events celebrating Japanese culture since 2009.  These include exhibitions featuring icons like Akira Kurosawa, the Japan Media Arts Festival, and the works of Ikuo Hirayama.

The growing cultural ties between the two nation are exemplified by the increasing number of Japanese tourists visiting the historic city of Istanbul. Japanese travellers continue seeking an immersive cultural experience in Istanbul. Events like this concert play a pivotal role in strengthening these bond.
