Mane poised to leave Munich, move to Manchester United thought to be a possibility

Manchester United has emerged as a surprising transfer option for Sadio Mane, who is expected to depart Bayern Munich this summer.

Mane moved from Anfield to Bayern Munich last summer in a £35.1 million deal. After making it obvious he wanted a fresh challenge, the seasoned forward ended his six trophy-filled seasons at the Merseyside club.

The Senegalese great scored 120 goals in 269 games for Liverpool, winning six major awards along the way. Klopp’s team has had a difficult time adjusting to life without the forward, who was consistently outstanding throughout his time at Anfield.

However, the forward at Bayern has not fared as expected. After reportedly striking teammate Leroy Sane following their 3-0 Champions League loss at Man City, the 31-year-old was making his acting debut after being suspended by the German champions for a Bundesliga match last month.

The ex-Reds attacker received a stiff fine in addition to being barred from Bayern’s Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim at the Allianz Arena. With competition from players like Sane, Serge Gnabry, and Thomas Muller, Mane has found it difficult to establish himself as a fixture in the club’s attack due to form and fitness difficulties.

He had trouble staying consistent under his last manager, Julian Nagelsmann, and his situation has not improved under Thomas Tuchel. He was only on for six minutes of the weekend win over Schalke and Sky Sports Germany has reported that the forward has no future at the club and will be sold this summer.

The veteran forward is probably only affordable to Premier League clubs, but a transfer to Liverpool is doubtful given that Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo are two of the recent high-profile additions.

The two clubs most likely to recruit Mane are Manchester United and Newcastle, according to the same publications in Germany. The Senegalese forward acknowledged in an interview from last year that, prior to Liverpool making an approach for him, he had a deal to transfer to Old Trafford (in 2016).

Mane admitted to the Daily Telegraph, “I have to say, I was pretty close to moving to Manchester United. “There was the contract I had. I had everything arranged. I was prepared, but I decided against doing it because I wanted to go to Liverpool.

“Jurgen Klopp’s initiative was persuaded of my support. I can still clearly recall the first time Klopp called me. We have a significant initiative at Liverpool, and I want you to be involved, he declared.

“Then, in order to see what I wanted at Southampton, he asked what position I wanted.” I alternated between playing on the right and left sides of the field. He responded, “But (Philippe) Coutinho is on the left!” after I stated that I preferred the left. So I decided to play on the right and said, “Never mind.” I could picture myself in every position.

This summer, United is eager to strengthen their offense by adding players and recruiting a prominent central striker. Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial’s futures are both uncertain, while Amad is set to play a part after a productive loan stint at Sunderland.
