Aleksandar Mitrovic’s woes from the penalty spot continued

On the last day of the season, Manchester United overcame a deficit to defeat Fulham and clinch third place in the Premier League thanks to a penalty save from David de Gea.

When Kenny Tete outran Marcus Rashford to stab Willian’s corner into the near post, Fulham seized the lead. When Casemiro fouled Tom Cairney in the box, they had the chance to make it 2-0, but David De Gea saved Aleksandar Mitrovic’s penalty with an excellent save.
Jadon Sancho scored the equalizer for United after Alejandro Garncho hit the underside of the crossbar. United comfortably hung on to clinch the three points after Fred inserted Bruno Fernandes, who dinked over Bernd Leno to make it 2-1.

With a victory, their fourth straight, they end with 75 points, surpassing Newcastle United. The final standing for Fulham is tenth. The key talking points from the match at Old Trafford are listed below.

Brilliant De Gea

Who prevails when a bad penalty taker faces a bad penalty saver? In this instance, De Gea was the solution.

The Spaniard has received criticism frequently for his poor track record stopping penalties, but he has improved this year. After stretching out to block Mitrovic’s shot, he went on to make three penalty saves during the past two seasons, second only to West Ham’s Lukasz Fabianski’s four.

However, De Gea’s dismal record is evident by the fact that it was his first Old Trafford penalty save since he stopped Leighton Baines in October 2014. Given that Mitrovic has become the only player in Premier League history to fail to score four penalties in a single season, he might no longer be allowed to take penalties in the future.

Garnacho Impressing

Since Garnacho’s injury comeback, United supporters have been pleading for him to be given more opportunities, and on Sunday, they got their wish. Along with Sancho and Rashford, the young player started on the left flank and was undoubtedly the smartest of the three.

On the spin, he instinctively tried to shave the post before trying to curl on the overlap and hit the underside of the crossbar. Garnacho is undoubtedly arguing his case for a spot in Ten Hag’s starting lineup for the FA Cup final.

FA Final Thoughts

It’s a job well done for United, who finished ahead of Newcastle and took third place. They finished the season with four straight wins, which is encouraging ahead of the FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday.

Before that game, Ten Hag will have a lot on his mind, with the composition of the assault being of special concern. Does Anthony Martial center Rashford at Wembley since he didn’t seem sharp when he entered the game?

Who will play in central midfield in addition to Fernandes and Casemiro, who are surefire starters? And now that Raphael Varane is back among the replacements, who will play in central defense?
