Messi has been hit with a two-week suspension by Paris Saint-Germain

Following an unauthorized trip to Saudi Arabia, Paris Saint-Germain was forced to suspend Lionel Messi, taking a similar approach to Manchester United with Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi’s PSG teammates were shocked after he traveled to Saudi Arabia without permission on Monday. The Argentine superstar is contractually required to visit the Gulf State as part of his duty as the country’s tourist ambassador, but he did not notify anyone at PSG of his trip.

Many teammates were perplexed as to why the 35-year-old was not present when they arrived at practice on Monday. According to reports, the star is anticipated to depart PSG when his contract expires at the end of the current season. His contract renewal is no longer a priority for the club.

The midfielder was aware that PSG players would be summoned to training on Monday following the previous day’s Ligue 1 defeat to Lorient. If they beat Lorient, they’d get a day off – but only if they won. Messi understood he had to turn up on Monday after his defeat. Nonetheless, no permission was sought from anyone at the club, including manager Christophe Galtier and director Luis Campos, for his trip.

On Monday, Saudi Tourism Minister Ahmed Al-Khateeb tweeted, accompanying several photos of Messi’s trip: “I am delighted to welcome #Messi and his family to Saudi Arabia, where they will enjoy magical tourist destinations and authentic experiences.” We welcome travelers from all over the world to come to Saudi Arabia and have an unforgettable experience.

Messi appeared to advertise his upcoming trip on his Instagram account (shared by the official tourism board page) on Sunday. “Who would have thought Saudi Arabia had so much greenery?” “Whenever possible, I like to explore its unexpected wonders.”

Messi’s time at PSG appears to be following a similar trend to Ronaldo’s final months at Manchester United. It was a similar circumstance in which a celebrity appeared to take the rules into his own hands and go above and beyond team discipline. After United’s decisive two-goal triumph against Spurs in October, the 38-year-old stormed down the tunnel at Old Trafford and fled the stadium before his colleagues returned to the dressing room.

Ronaldo was heavily chastised for his conduct at the conclusion of that match, with headlines underlining how many of his club teammates were appalled by his actions. It was a key moment in the deterioration of the forward’s relationship with his manager, Erik Ten Hag.

That came before Ronaldo’s explosive interview with Piers Morgan, in which he accused United of betraying him and attempting to force him out of the club. Ronaldo left the club by mutual consent a few weeks later, forfeiting the remaining seven months of his contract.

The second similar thread, of course, is Saudi Arabia, the location of Messi’s vacation and the country where Ronaldo now plays after joining Al-Nassr in January. Messi, on the other hand, has nothing to complain about.

The two-week suspension, which includes a ban from the club’s training facilities, is just and proper, but it symbolizes the end of the ‘bling bling’ superstar era, which was powered by people who put their own interests ahead of the team’s. These must surely now be his closing few months in the French capital.
