Twitter CEO Outlines The Platform’s Mission Under Her Tenure
A week after taking over billionaire and Mogul Elon Musk as the CEO of Twitter, Linda Yaccarino has begun her campaign, outlining her plans for “Twitter 2.0.”
In a series of Tweets posted on Monday, 12th June, Yaccarino has touted Twitter as the “Global town square” as well as a reliable source of information.
“Twitter is on a mission to become the world’s most accurate real-time information source and a global town square for communication. That’s not an empty promise. That’s OUR reality,” she wrote via her official Twitter account.
Yaccarino, also compared what Musk is doing at Twitter to what he has done with two of his largest investments, Tesla and SpaceX. “Elon knew space exploration and electric vehicles needed transformation, so he did it,” another tweet read.
“It’s also becoming clear that the global town square [Twitter] needs transformation—to drive civilization forward through the unfiltered exchange of information and open dialogue about the things that matter most to us,” she added.
Yaccarino, formerly of NBCUniversal Marketing, seems to be on damage patrol at Twitter, seeking to rectify some of the hits the company has taken under Elon Musk’s tenure.
Since Musk took over, his tenure has been marred by controversies with the company tanking financially and losing credibility as a result of disinformation.
Some of the biggest decisions by Musk include him laying off 80% of Twitter’s staff, rolling back content moderation on the platform, and revamping Twitter’s verification model to a pay model open to any user willing to pay $8 per month instead of reserving it for public figures and organizations.
As a result of these decisions, brands, which are a key revenue generator for the platform via advertisements, have fled the platform under Musk’s watch. These problems are now set to become Yaccarino’s as Musk turns his attention to the technology side of the platform as well as Tesla and SpaceX.
In her former role, Ms. Yaccarino is recognized for having navigated NBCUniversal through changes in the media landscape brought on by evolving technology.
She reorganized the company’s advertising sales department in her previous position, and she was responsible for the 2020 launch of Peacock, a streaming service that is ad-supported.
Elon Musk’s trust in her is in the hope that she can do the same for Twitter and help it break even as well as lure advertisers back to the platform.
“We believe Linda has a solid vision for Twitter with a lot of wood to chop that can be turned around. This is a great first step and she knows the task ahead for Twitter to monetize the platform which remains the golden goose.” Daniel Ives from Wedbush Securities said.
