Five Games, five defeats as Brentford Thrash Blues 2-0

Frank Lampard is the manager who has forgotten what it’s like to win, and there’s no indication of an emergency handbrake.

Lampard has lost 13 of his last 14 games as Everton and Chelsea head coach, with the exception being a 1-1 draw at Manchester City. Mauricio Pochettino, the former Tottenham Hotspur manager, is poised to take over in the summer after verbally agreeing to terms with Blues owner Todd Boehly. However, Poch Spice could inherit the weakest Chelsea Premier League club in history.

Frank Lampard’s return to Chelsea ended in tragedy on Wednesday night, when the Blues were defeated 2-0 by Brentford at Stamford Bridge.

An own goal by Cesar Azpilicueta was followed by a Bryan Mbeumo strike a little over ten minutes from time to send West London to their 13th league defeat of the season. This puts them in 11th place in the rankings, and any type of European football next season appears to be out of the question.

The defeat also puts interim manager Lampard in a tight situation following five losses in five games since his return to Stamford Bridge.

And four of their last six games are against the top four – three of them away from home – starting with a trip to wounded leaders Arsenal on Tuesday.

Lampard shrugged: “That’s the reality, a really tough run-in. There’s no point looking further than the next one, which is Arsenal. The team has to be motivated because there’s a lot on it.

“When I came back I didn’t (set) a bar because I understood there would be challenges behind the scenes, and that’s been clear. In a short time frame, it’s hard to get that turn, and I haven’t got it yet.”

Chelsea was booed off after Wednesday night’s toothless 2-0 home defeat by Brentford, and Lampard admitted: “Absolutely they are worried – if you’re a Chelsea fan, you’re used to 20 years of success and you want more.

With that in mind, here are the top headlines from Chelsea ;

Lampard sends Boehly a message

During Wednesday evening’s dreadful match against Brentford, the Chelsea manager made a telling choice to leave a number of the Blues’ expensive newcomers out of the team.

Mykhaylo Mudryk, who cost £88 million, joined other January signings Benoit Badiashile, Noni Madueke, and Joao Felix on the bench against the Bees. Todd Boehly has spent more than £150 million on players the current manager believes are only good enough to be picked as substitutes.

In reality, only record signing Enzo Fernandez was picked in the XI from their most recent window, with Lampard choosing a more experienced lineup.

Mount gives injury update

Mason Mount has told fans he “can’t wait to get back to training” despite the Chelsea midfielder having been ruled out for the rest of the season.

He has recently been struggling with a pelvic issue and was forced to undergo surgery. Taking to Instagram, he wrote: “Had a minor procedure yesterday to sort out a discomfort I had for a while.

“Everything went well and I’m feeling good. Time to rest but can’t wait to get back to training in the coming weeks! Thanks for all your messages of support and a massive thank you to the medical team, doctors, and nurses for looking after me.”
