Juventus suffer fresh blow in a challenging season ruining Champions League Hopes

Juventus will no longer be eligible to play in the Champions League the following season thanks to a 10-point deduction.

The Old Lady, who is now second in Serie A and plays Empoli this evening, received the penalty at a court hearing this afternoon, which is the most recent development in their false accounting case. Although an 11-point punishment was proposed, the panel decided on 10 instead. Due to alleged financial irregularities and player price inflation during transfers, Juve has initially assessed a 15-point fine. However, it was overturned on appeal a month ago, allowing Max Allegri’s squad to get back into the top four.

Numerous of the club’s top administrators have been placed on administrative leave for their roles in the case, including Fabio Paratici, who was forced to resign from his position as Tottenham Hotspur manager after receiving a 30-month suspension that was later extended globally by FIFA.

The highest sports court in Italy rejected Paratici’s request to have his suspension reversed on April 20. Paratici was employed by Juve from 2010 till 2021.

He can file a civil lawsuit or take his case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland, but it may be months before either course of action is finished.

While Paratici, Andrea Agnelli, and Federico Cherubini had their appeals dismissed, Pavel Nedved, Paolo Garimberti, and Enrico Vellano were all successful in contesting their accusations.

As reported by Football Italia, it is theoretically possible for Juventus to lodge a further appeal. However, it has been suggested that there is little chance of this being successful.

“Juventus Football Club takes note of what was decided by the FIGC Court of Appeal and reserves the right to read the reasons to evaluate a possible appeal to the Guarantee Board at CONI,” a statement from the club reads.

“What was established by the fifth instance of judgment in this matter, which began more than a year ago, arouses great bitterness in the club and in its millions of supporters who, in the absence of clear rules, find themselves extremely penalized with the application of sanctions that seem to take into account the principle of proportionality. While not ignoring the need for urgency, which Juventus has never shied away from during the proceedings, it is emphasized that these are facts that still have to be evaluated by a judge.”

Prior to their matchup with Empoli, Juve has dropped from second in the standings to outside the Champions League spots as a result of the points deduction. Even getting all three points from their next three games might not be enough for them to make it back into the top four at the end of the season.

Their point total decreased from 69 to 59 before the encounter on Monday. The highest point they can get is 68, whereas AC Milan, who are currently in fourth place due to Juve’s collapse in the standings, have 64 points with two games remaining.

Juventus’ home match against fellow Champions League contenders Milan immediately following the Empoli game has considerably more significance. They will play Udinese to round out the season, but by then, a top-four finish might be out of their reach.

After losing to Sevilla in the Europa League semifinals, Juventus has also forfeited its chance of a potential second entry into the Champions League. The Bianconeri took the lead after Dusan Vlahovic’s goal, but Suso soon tied the score. Erik Lamela then headed in the winning goal for the Spanish team in the extra period.
