Turkish Airlines has restarted flights to Libya after nearly a decade. The major Turkish airline suspended services to the North African country in 2014 due to ongoing conflict and instability. However, with improving security conditions, Turkish Airlines has decided to recommence operations to Libya.
On Thursday, April 27th, 2024, the airline’s first flight from Istanbul landed at Mitiga International Airport in Tripoli after a gap of nine years. A ceremony was held at the airport to mark this significant occasion.
Turkish Airlines’ CEO Bilal Eksi was present, highlighting the historical ties between Turkey and Libya. “We are delighted to reconnect with Libya, a nation with which we share a deep bond dating back centuries,” Eksi remarked. “This route resumption reinforces our commitment to foster cultural exchange across the African continent and beyond.”
For travelers, this restoration of air connectivity with Istanbul is immensely beneficial. Turkish Airlines offers a wide global route network via its hub at the brand new Istanbul Airport. Libyans and international visitors to Libya can now conveniently access over 300 destinations worldwide with just one stopover in Istanbul.
The flight resumption is seen as a major boost for Libya’s tourism sector which has struggled due to years of instability. “Turkish Airlines’ Istanbul service will facilitate travel to and from Libya tremendously,” said Mustafa Musrati, Libya’s Minister of Tourism. “We are excited about the possibilities this opens up for reviving our tourism industry.”
Safety has been a prime consideration in Turkish Airlines’ decision. The airline has been closely monitoring the situation in Libya. With the UN-backed government consolidating control and security improvements on the ground, Turkish Airlines is confident that the time is right to recommence operations.
For travelers enthusiastic about exploring Libya’s ancient ruins, scenic Mediterranean coastline and vibrant culture, efficient air connectivity from Istanbul is now available once again after a lengthy hiatus. Turkish Airlines’ fleet renewal program ensures a comfortable journey in modern aircraft too.
