Easter travellers in London are being advised to plan ahead due to several closures and engineering works scheduled to take place during the holiday season. Transport for London (TfL) has announced that the Elizabeth line between London Paddington and Stratford/Abbey Wood will be closed for another round of engineering work. However, disruption in central London is expected to be minimal, with much of the Underground and Overground services working as usual.
According to TfL, some disruptions are expected on lines including Westferry – Stratford on the DLR, Highbury & Islington – New Cross on the Overground, and East Croydon – Beckenham Junction. Additionally, Highbury & Islington to New Cross Gate, New Cross, and Clapham Junction will not run, and there will also be no Night Overground. On March 31st, the Overground will also not run between Sydenham and Crystal Palace.
The London Overground will not run from Sunday, March 31st to Monday, April 1st, from Liverpool Street to Enfield Town, Cheshunt, and Chingford. TfL has said that the closures are necessary to allow for station improvements at Surrey Quays, where a new station entrance and step-free access are being installed. Works on the branch to Crystal Palace are also scheduled to improve signalling on the line, to facilitate a more reliable service.
TfL’s Chief Operating Officer, Glynn Barton, said, “The majority of our network will be running over the Easter weekend to help everyone make the most of the city. However, there will be some closures to allow for essential safety works and service upgrades, and we advise customers to plan ahead and check their routes before travelling to ensure a smooth journey.”
To help travellers get around during the Easter weekend, buses will replace trains on some routes. TfL has urged travellers to allow extra time for their journeys and double-check their routes before setting off. In slightly more unusual news, the London Overground will be stopping at London Bridge for one day only on Easter Sunday. Trains will run from West Croydon to London Bridge to help people get into central London despite the engineering works.
TfL has also advised that there are plenty of alternative travel options available, and travellers can find information on the TfL website and through TfL travel tools, including the TfL Go app.
