Erling Haaland has broken the record for the most goals in a Premier League season
Erling Haaland has smashed the Premier League record for most goals scored in a season.
In Manchester City’s 3-0 win over West Ham on Wednesday, the 22-year-old scored his 35th Premier League goal of the season. Nathan Ake gave Pep Guardiola’s team the lead before Haaland broke the record. Phil Foden scored City’s third goal to secure a crucial three points at the Etihad Stadium.
Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole had previously held the record for Newcastle and Manchester United, respectively, and no one had come close until Haaland arrived at City. The attacker surpassed the record with five matches to go as Pep Guardiola’s team chases their sixth title in six years.
After being sent through by Jack Grealish, the attacker dinked the ball over the onrushing Lukasz Fabianski for a superb finish. Up until the goal, the Norwegian had been pretty quiet, but he showed his absolute class and what he can do when given a clear-cut chance.
Haaland now has 35 Premier League goals and 51 overall, a fantastic figure for a striker who was written off by many after missing several chances in the Community Shield in July. However, since joining City for £51 million from Borussia Dortmund, he has proven to be a world-class signing.
Haaland has not looked back since netting his first City goal against, ironically, West Ham in August. He scored twice on the first day of the season at the London Stadium before scoring 13 more goals in his next eight top-flight outings to maintain his strong start in England.
Haaland, who was also productive in the Champions League, scored his fourth hat-trick of the season in a 3-0 victory over Wolves to put any questions about his post-World Cup form to rest. He’s been ticking ever since, and he tied the Premier League record in City’s 2-1 win against Fulham on Sunday.
After the game, Guardiola lauded Haaland. “It’s unbelievable how many goals he has scored to help us win games,” he told Sky Sports. Everyone on the team is pleased since he is a one-of-a-kind individual.
“It was nice, and he deserved his guard of honor because it’s a huge accomplishment.” Maybe he’ll be able to break his own record one day. He must score many goals.”
City’s victory over West Ham returned them to the top of the Premier League. They are presently one point ahead of Arsenal in the title battle.
