Twitter User Asks Elon Musk To ‘Buy The WHO’

Replying to a query on Twitter by an entrepreneur, Elon Musk sparked intrigue as speculation began on the possibility of him purchasing the World Health Organization from Bill Gates.

On Saturday, June 10th, entrepreneur Dr. Eli David in a tweet addressed to Elon Musk asked him, @elonmusk, can you buy WHO from Bill Gates and make it about health?

A day later, Elon Musk had caught wind of the Tweet and replied. The tweet read, “How much does it cost?” To which David then replied, “WHO annual budget: $7B WHO annual damage: $700B+.”

Musk’s tweet created a buzz on Twitter and David played a critical part in it. Tweeting a screenshot of the exchange between himself and Mr. Musk, he wrote, “Breaking: @elonmusk is considering buying WHO.”

So why is this a big deal? Musk’s response to the proposition bears similarity to another conversation Musk had on Twitter regarding the purchase of Twitter in 2017. A few years later, Elon Musk would purchase the platform for $44 billion.

On 21st December 2017, Musk simply tweeted, “I love Twitter,” to show his enthusiasm for the social media site. A user, Dave Smith, responded by advising him to buy it. Musk, in his signature manner, responded by asking, “How much is it?” and the rest is history.

The uncanny resemblance of the two scenarios especially considering how Twitter has played out led to Twitter users speculating on whether WHO just might be Elon Musk’s next big haul.

A small number of Twitter users even created a poll asking whether they would expect a repeat of the WHO’s Twitter takeover. 69 percent of respondents chose “Yes,” and the rest chose “No.”

However, Elon Musk also has in the past tweeted about buying Coca-Cola which also had followers guessing that it was Elon Musk’s next acquisition.

So Why Are People Proposing Bill Gates Leave The WHO?

The WHO is a United Nations organization tasked with managing issues related to global public health. However, the tweet from David suggests that Bill Gates owns the WHO which is not the case.

The WHO is governed by its members, who contribute public funds; nevertheless, it also significantly depends on private contributors. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, founded by Gates and his ex-wife Melinda Gates, has grown over time to rank as the second largest donor to the WHO.

The foundation has been instrumental in assisting the agency’s numerous projects and activities aimed at enhancing global health outcomes.

However, while the foundation has been making significant donations to the organization, its funds have been met with mixed reactions. Some who criticize the funding, claim that the huge amounts give Bill Gates too much influence on the platform.
