Linda Yaccarino Is The New Twitter CEO
It’s been a long time coming, but Elon Musk has finally delivered on his promise to step down as Twitter CEO. And no, it’s not Floki, his dog, as he ‘joked’ in April.
However, in pure Elon Musk fashion, he was cryptic with the announcement, providing only information on the gender of the incumbent.
In a tweet posted on Thursday, the billionaire announced, “Excited to announce that I’ve hired a new CEO for X/Twitter. She will be starting in ~6 weeks! My role will transition to being exec chair & CTO, overseeing product, software & sysops.”
The pronoun “she” was all people had to go on as speculation began immediately on who would be taking over as Twitter CEO. As mentioned in an earlier article, two major names stood out from the rest.
That is NBCU’s Linda Yaccarino and Twitter’s Ella Irwin who is leading the platform’s trust and safety efforts. After letting the public stew and speculate, after 22 hours, Musk finally ended the anticipation.
He tweeted, “I am excited to welcome Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter! @LindaYacc will focus primarily on business operations, while I focus on product design & new technology. Looking forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the everything app.”
Who Is Linda Yaccarino?
Linda Yaccarino was the head of global advertising for NBCUniversal, a US media and entertainment conglomerate. She left NBCU early on Friday 12th May (after Musk’s Thursday announcement).
This ignited speculation that Musk might have chosen her for the CEO position at Twitter especially considering her support for the billionaire.
Prior to being an NBCU employee, Yaccarino worked at Turner, a global entertainment company for almost 2 decades. As per her LinkedIn, Yaccarino has served at NBC in various positions.
These include the position of chair for advertising and client partnerships and president of cable entertainment and digital advertising sales. She has spent 12 years at the company having joined in 2011.
In these 12 years, the company has credited Yaccarino alongside her team, with generating over $100 billion (€92 billion) in ad sales.
What Is She Walking Into In Her New Role?
After months of legal battle, Musk purchased Twitter last year in October for $44 billion (€40.4 billion). Fast forward to May 2023, the company is worth around $20 billion.
Since taking over the platform, advertisers have distanced themselves from the platform which has hampered Musk’s efforts to generate revenue on the social platform. He has since launched new features such as Twitter Blue and monetized API access.
However, these moves do not seem to have helped much but have only put his management under more scrutiny and management.
The appointment of Yaccarino, from a revenue generation point of view makes perfect sense. She brings with her a wealth of experience in the media and advertising sectors, a field that Musk has found particularly difficult.
