Despite the Rocky Start, Zambia’s Participation in the Paralympics Remains Intact
Despite being unexpectedly left out of the opening ceremony, Zambia is set to compete in the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games as initially planned. REUTERS recently reported that, although the Zambian team missed the parade of nations on Wednesday, they are still set to compete in the games.
The grand opening ceremony, held along the famous Champs-Élysées and ending at the historic Place de la Concorde, drew around 50,000 spectators. The event was marked by excitement and national pride as athletes from various countries represented their nations as reported by BBC Sports.
Zambia’s flag was noticeably missing, causing some concern on their participation in the event. During a press conference on Thursday, IPC spokesperson Craig Spence explained that Zambia’s absence was due to a communication breakdown with their delegation.
“The Zambia flag was not included in the parade. No one has arrived yet, and we’ve had zero communication in the last few days,” Spence stated. “We told them if you don’t confirm your traveling plans and show us your tickets, we will remove the flag.”
Despite the initial hiccup, Zambia will still compete in the Paralympics.
Their delegation features two para-athletes set to participate in para-athletics on September 4 and 5. Although their names haven’t been revealed, these athletes are anticipated to represent Zambia in track and field events.
As the Games continue, Zambia’s athletes will have the opportunity to shine on the global stage. Their participation will showcase their personal achievements and the resilience of their nation. Running from August 28 to September 8, the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games are set to celebrate athletic excellence.
Zambia’s journey adds an intriguing element to this year’s event, highlighting the unpredictability of international sports and the perseverance needed to overcome challenges both on and off the field.
