Dame Time’s Clock Still Two Decades Back
It is undeniable that the hype and buzz around Victor Wembanyama is massive but to compare it with what LeBron James got back in 2003 is where Damian Lillard draws the line.
The majority of the people including sports analysts, NBA players and fans all hail Wembanyama with his hype being compared to that LeBron James got back in 2003.
Victor is also set to be the first overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft set for June 22, 2023, and we can’t wait to see where he ends up.
As the NBA draft lottery saw the Spurs edge out the Detroit Pistons and Houston Rockets to get the rights to draft first, speculations have been going around that they’ll probably pick Wemby.
Everybody is excited about Wembanyama with notable names heaping praise on the French prodigy.
From being called the Gen-Z Kareem Abdul Jabbar to being called the best player, Victor’s compliments don’t look like they will be ending any time soon.
One complement however does not sit well with Portland Trail Blazers Point guard Damian Lillard.
Dame Time as he is famously known does not think the hype Victor is getting should be compared in any way to what LeBron James got back in 2003.
In a tweet on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, that has since gone viral, Lillard tweeted, “I was in 7th grade when they were Hyping bron on ESPN! Mf still at the top 20 years later…stop playing with dude bra…it’s getting outa pocket.”
Lillard reckons LeBron’s hype is incomparable as long as every era is concerned and that Wemby does not come close in any way.
Dame thinks LeBron’s longevity is not something to play with as seen that LeBron is still going strong 20 years later since his inaugural season in the NBA in 2003.
LeBron coming to the NBA when the Cleveland Cavaliers selected him first overall in 2003 saw him arrive with so many expectations in the NBA.
Dubbed “The Chosen One”, it looks like he lived up to the hype and four rings later and a scoring title, LeBron James is still going strong.
However, we can’t deny Victor’s immense talents, skills and impact on the court which has led to the comparison with LeBron James.
For sure the 7’4” phenom looks everything ready to take over the NBA and he could walk the same path LeBron James did.
Even LeBron James acknowledged Wemby as a generational talent when he said, “Everybody has been a unicorn over the last few years, but he’s more like an alien.
No one has ever seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is out on the floor.
At his ability to put the ball on the floor, shoot step-back jumpers out of the post, step-back threes, catch-and-shoot threes and block shots. He’s for sure a generational talent.”
Looks like King James knows talent when he sees one and they might be identical in so many ways that we can imagine. There is enough glory for both of them to bask in.
LeBron James has already proved himself and it’s up to Victor to do the same in the NBA. Perhaps that way, Dame Time might let it go.
