Czech farmers will protest on Wednesday, March 20 across the country. This follows statements issued by the chairman of the Agricultural Union, Martin Pýcha.

These protests come after a series of farmers’ outcry actions in recent weeks. Protests held before have involved driving tractors on the roads, causing a standstill on main roads in Prague.

The Czech Republic Minister of Agriculture, Marek Výborný requested the farmers’ protests not to block traffic like in past times. Výborný gave his statement on CNN’s Prima News.

“I would very much beg for there really to be no disruption to traffic,” said Marek Výborný.

The protests join arms with the pan-European farm demonstrations in other European Union states. Farmers from Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium will also hold protests in their countries.

In Czechia, farmers are not happy with the insufficient government support of the agricultural sector. Their concerns include rural employment support, animal welfare funding, and the return of the pre-consolidation land taxation model. They also want the limitation of duty-free imports of agricultural products from non-EU member states.

Agriculture Minister Marek Výborný promised to table a sanction of Russian grain in an upcoming EU agriculture ministers meeting. The meeting will be held on March 26 and this grain is one of the concerns farmers want addressed. Výborný’s promise follows the Cabinet’s approval of some measures to help farmers agreed on Wednesday 13, March 2024.

Besides, through their representatives, Czech farmers appreciate the effort the government is making but they claim more needs to be done.

The details of how the farmers plan to conduct their protests are unclear. However, according to the organizers, they may hold public gatherings and discussions to explain their plight. The other direction the protests can take is marching in their different regions including the city center.
