Juventus have 15-point penalty quashed and make Serie A table look very different
It has been verified that Juventus’ 15-point deduction has been restored by Italian football officials.
With eight games remaining, the Serie A powers have pushed Milan rivals Inter and AC out of the Champions League berths. Three hours before their crucial Europa League quarter-final second leg against Sporting Lisbon on Thursday, Juventus’ Serie A penalty was revoked pending a new trial to further clarify their capital gains controversy, which means the FIGC Federal Court of Appeal must re-evaluate its original decision in January.
The procedure is expected to last until after the end of the current season, so any punishment Juve receives might be until the 2023-24 season. The announcement on Thursday immediately elevates Massimiliano Allegri’s team to third position with 59 points, dropping Jose Mourinho’s Roma to fourth and altering the landscape of the race for European football this season.
Milan and Inter, who will play in an epic Champions League semi-final next month, are suddenly fifth and sixth, putting their top-four chances at risk. While league leaders Napoli are practically out of sight at the top of Serie A, there is still a chance for Juventus to take second place, since they are now only two points behind Lazio.
Also from Italy, Fabio Paratici, the current Tottenham managing director and former Juve player, has had his appeal against his two-and-a-half-year ban from football, which FIFA extended globally, dismissed. The same is true for appeals against former colleagues Andrea Agnelli and Federico Cherubini’s bans, though an appeal against Pavel Nedved’s ban was accepted. Juventus’ verdict had been increasingly likely since the three-hour hearing which took place at the Italian Council of Sports Guarantee on Wednesday afternoon. The FIGC didn’t present any evidence at the appeal, leading to their place being taken by Italian National Olympic Committee prosecutor Ugo Taucer.
As quoted by Football Italia, Taucer confessed that the ruling “has a lack of clarity in the motivation that must be appreciated and evaluated by a new judgment.”
Juventus hoped to turn their attention back to the pitch on Thursday in Lisbon, boasting a narrow 1-0 lead from a sluggish first leg. If Allegri and co advance, they’ll face either Manchester United or Sevilla in the Europa League semi-finals.
“The match is long and will give us difficulties, they are an excellent team in terms of organization,” Allegri told Sky Italia. “The goal is important and not simple, Sporting eliminated Arsenal. We don’t think about the first leg but that is a challenge.”
