There is a misconception that cities stink. All those people, all that garbage, and all that sewage under the ground. However, it turns out that some metropolises smell quite good. A recent study by HAYPP shed light on this often overlooked aspect of urban life, analyzing 30 major cities in Europe and beyond to determine which is the sweetest-smelling of them all.

Researchers calculated smell scores for each city based on factors such as cleanliness and the proportion of flower shops, bakeries, and perfume shops. And Paris, with its romantic ambiance and elegant boulevards, took second place.

French culture places a high value on aesthetics and the appreciation of the senses, including smell, so it’s no surprise that Paris, France, ranks second with a smell score of 8.15 out of 10.

Paris has a long history with the luxury fragrance industry. The city is home to renowned perfume houses and boutiques, with 11.62 perfume shops per 10 km².

Parisians have a strong coffee and pastry culture. The inviting scents of freshly brewed coffee and the sweet aroma of pastries can be detected wafting from the city’s impressive 11.4 bakeries per 10 square kilometers. With an EPI score of 62.5 for overall cleanliness, both locals and visitors can expect an olfactory adventure.
