China’s President Calls For Greater State Control On AI
As part of efforts to combat “dangerous storms” facing the nation, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other top officials in the nation have urged for increased state regulation of artificial intelligence (AI).
At a National Security Commission meeting held on Tuesday 30th May, the president and other top Communist party leaders decided to “improve security governance of network data and artificial intelligence.”
The official Chinese news agency, Xinhua disclosed a readout from the communist party meeting. The readout read, “We must be prepared for worst-case and extreme scenarios, and be ready to withstand the major test of high winds, choppy waters, and even dangerous storms.”
President Xi lamented that the “complexity and severity of national security problems faced by our country have increased dramatically.” One of these problems according to the country is AI-generated deep fakes which according to Beijing present a “danger to national security and social stability.”
In the meeting, President Xi urged that the country should take “dedicated efforts to safeguard political security and improve the security governance of internet data and artificial intelligence.”
China and AI Regulation So Far
In recent months, China like many nations has made numerous efforts to regulate the ever-growing AI technology and large language models. Last month, the government unveiled a draft law that requires all AI technology and products to be assessed by a governing body before they are released for public use.
As per the law, which is yet to be passed, AI technology and products used in China have to reflect “core socialist values” and at the same time must not “contain content on the subversion of state power.”
This is very consistent with Chinese government policies as the government already takes steps to suppress any perceived political threats to the party’s dominance.
The comments by President Xi and the Communist party leaders were echoed on the other side of the world on the very same day by Scientists and tech industry leaders, including high-level executives at Microsoft and Google.
This was when the tech leaders provided a stern warning on the danger that AI poses to the fate of humankind.
In a statement, they said, “Mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war.”
Since the launch of ChatGPT late last year, there have been significant developments with the technology with more powerful AI models and products being developed by the day.
This has been considerably worrying due to the lack of regulation regarding the technology. Some involved in the topic have proposed a United Nations treaty to regulate the technology.
