Boxpark Shoreditch, the vibrant shipping container complex credited with pioneering the “pop-up mall” concept, will be closing for good this summer. After 13 years of serving up delicious eats, trendy shopping, and a unique social atmosphere, the site will vacate its spot.

According to the official report on the company’s website,  they have reached the expiration of their lease, and their vacation is to make way for a major redevelopment project on the 4.5 hectare site.

While the news  stings for fans of the Shoreditch staple, it’s important to remember its origins as a “meanwhile use” scheme. This meant the project was always intended to be temporary. The innovative concept, utilizing repurposed shipping containers, not only provided a platform for independent businesses to flourish but also became a cultural hub, attracting crowds with its lively atmosphere and diverse offerings.

The closure, however, doesn’t mark the end of Boxpark’s journey. The company is set to unveil two new London locations this year – Boxpark Camden and BoxHall Liverpool Street. While details remain under wraps, Boxpark fans can look forward to these new spots.

For those with fond memories of Boxpark Shoreditch, there’s still time to make a final visit and soak up the atmosphere. The exact closing date remains unconfirmed, but it’s best to head down before the end of summer to experience this piece of London’s recent history one last time.
