Big Ben and Other Iconic London Landmarks That Have Changed Their Names

Throughout London’s history, many famous landmarks and locations have undergone name changes, often at the whims of authorities or owners. From streets and buildings to entire neighbourhoods, the city’s landscape has been shaped by evolving identities.

One such example is the iconic clock tower commonly known as “Big Ben.” Originally officially named the Clock Tower, it was informally referred to as “Big Ben” for years. However, in 2012, it was officially renamed the Elizabeth Tower in honour of the Diamond Jubilee, yet the nickname “Big Ben” remains prevalent.

The Emirates Air Line, a cable car attraction, has also experienced a shift in name due to sponsorship changes. Initially named the Emirates Air Line, it later became the IFS Cloud Cable Car following a change in sponsors. However, some Londoners fondly refer to it as the “Dangleway,” a term coined by a local blogger.

Transport links have also been subject to name changes. The Gillespie Road tube station was renamed Arsenal tube station in 1932 after lobbying efforts by Herbert Chapman and others associated with the football club. Despite the change, remnants of the original name can still be seen in the station’s glazed tiles.

In the realm of museums, the Museum of London has announced plans to revert to its previous name, the London Museum, upon its relocation to Smithfield in 2026. This change represents a return to the institution’s original nominative roots, as it was known as the London Museum from 1912 to 1976 before adopting the name Museum of London.
