As the Easter season arrives, Barcelona, the vibrant city renowned for its iconic Sagrada Familia, the enchanting Gothic Quarter, and the alluring Barceloneta beach, prepares to welcome an influx of visitors.
With its numerous attractions, the city often grapples with congestion, particularly on the roads, where motorists vying for space can create chaos and disrupt the flow of traffic.
However, the year 2024 promises to be different, as Barcelona has proactively braced itself to tackle the anticipated traffic mayhem, pledging to provide visitors with a heavenly experience during their stay.
According to reports from Catalan News, the city is bracing for a surge in holiday traffic, with an estimated 575,000 motorists expected to depart Barcelona between Thursday and Friday for the Easter holiday.
Recognizing the heightened risk of accidents on Fridays and Saturday afternoons, the Catalan Traffic Agency (SCT) has issued urgent warnings, urging motorists to exercise utmost vigilance on the roads.
Ramon Lamiel, the director of the SCT, emphasizes that most accidents occur during holidays, particularly on secondary roads near travelers’ accommodations.
Alarmingly, over 60% of these incidents transpire in the afternoon hours, with fatigue and poor visibility cited as the primary contributing factors.
As travelers set their sights on the alluring Costa Brava in the north and the picturesque Costa Daurada in the south, the majority of traffic is expected to converge on the AP-7, Catalonia’s main motorway.
This vital artery has experienced a significant surge in traffic since the removal of tolls two years ago. In an unprecedented move, the SCT will introduce two additional exit lanes on the AP-7 motorway, which runs along the Mediterranean coast and links Catalonia with France and Valencia, in a bid to alleviate motorway congestion.
On Thursday, these supplementary lanes will be operational, with one located in the north between Montornès del Vallès, near Barcelona, and Sils in Girona, and the other in the south between Martorell, close to Barcelona, and Banyeres del Penedès in Tarragona.
To ensure smooth traffic flow, a speed limit of 62 mph will be enforced in both directions along these sections. The SCT’s special operation will commence at 3 pm on Thursday, anticipating a peak in departures until midday on Friday.
The operation is scheduled to conclude at midnight on Easter Monday, by which time an estimated 590,000 vehicles are expected to have returned home.
The SCT has assured the public that it will maintain vigilance during the return journey, with a particular focus on Sunday afternoon.
Lamiel acknowledges potential challenges, stating, “We are relatively worried because rain can cause us problems in setting up the operations, but the forecast changes every six hours, and we will have everything ready.”
Complementing the SCT’s efforts, the Catalan Police Mossos d’Esquadra is poised to conduct over 1,500 checks throughout the extended weekend, with more than 1,700 traffic officers involved in the operation, as reported by Catalan News.
Commissioner Carles Anfruns revealed that the police will carry out 413 alcohol and drug checks, 251 passive safety checks, 231 motorcycle checks, 302 distraction checks, 233-speed checks, and 110 traffic checks, ensuring a safe and seamless experience for all visitors and residents alike.
These comprehensive measures underscore Barcelona’s unwavering commitment to providing a seamless and unforgettable experience for those celebrating Easter within its captivating confines or embarking on journeys beyond its borders.
