Back on Track: Europe’s Night Trains Make a Stylish Return

Night trains, which some people might think of as old-fashioned, are making a comeback in Europe. While budget airlines have dominated the travel scene in recent years, night trains are experiencing a revival, fueled by growing environmental awareness.

The resurgence of night trains aligns with the sustainability and slow travel movement. Travelers now prioritize reducing their carbon footprint, and night trains provide a greener alternative to short flights. Opting for trains significantly lowers CO2 emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.

Additionally, slow travel emphasizes the journey itself, allowing passengers to immerse themselves in Europe’s landscapes and cultures. One such revival is the Nightjet, an overnight train service operated by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).

Eurail revealed that the Nightjet NJ40469 departs from Paris Gare de l’Est and meandering through scenic landscapes and making significant stops in cities like Strasbourg, Erfurt, and Halle. Its ultimate destination is Berlin Central Station, with the entire journey lasting around 13 hours and 14 minutes.

Rail.cc recently revealed that the Nightjet offers cozy shared compartments with bunk beds, creating a comfortable and social travel experience. Passengers rest during the journey, arriving at their destination refreshed and eager to explore.  Nightjet tickets begin at EUR 29.90, offering an economical choice compared to flights or hotel stays.

Booking early increases your chances of securing an economy rail or savings fare ticket. Travelers departing on less crowded days, that is between Mondays to Friday may also find lower prices.

Kids under 5 travel free when sharing a berth with an adult. Families can reserve private compartments for a comfortable journey. As both governments and travelers prioritize lowering carbon emissions, night trains offer a practical and delightful choice.

Not only are they an eco-friendly substitute for flights, but they also foster a feeling of European togetherness and interconnections. The renewed Paris-Berlin Nightjet exemplifies this trend, inspiring hope for a greener travel landscape across Europe.
