Republicans Release An Attack Ad Aimed At Biden’s Second Term Aspirations
On Tuesday, 25th April, the 46th President of the United States of America (POTUS) announced that he would be running for a second term in the 2024 elections. The Republican National Committee (RNC) was quick to respond to the announcement with a rather shocking attack ad.
The ad was aimed directly at President-bidden and his vice Kamala Harris and get this, the video was generated entirely using artificial intelligence. The video seems to show a view of the future as per the Republican counterparts if President Biden were to win the elections in 2024. And Boy is the “future” gloomy!
The video features AI-generated images depicting Biden and his Vice celebrating a win after the elections. What follows is a series of imagined reports from the dystopian future. The reports include international and domestic crises that the ad suggests are inevitable if the pair is re-elected for a second term.
The video was posted on the video streaming platform YouTube by GOP, the official account of the Republican National Committee (RNC). The video is captioned “Beat Biden” and has a description that reads, “An AI-generated look into the country’s possible future if Joe Biden is re-elected in 2024.” It has a small disclaimer in the top left of the screen that reads, “built entirely with AI imagery.”
As of now, it is not clear what tools or AI model was used by the RNC to generate the ad. As per Verge, there is no way of knowing if the video has violated any terms and conditions.
AI In Politics
The most significant development in AI came in November 2022 with the launch of the popular text generation model ChatGPT. Since then, we’ve seen the rise of a plethora of AI models that are getting more powerful by the day. There have been AI models that can generate realistic images that are indistinguishable from a photograph. Remember the “Pope in a jacket” image?
After significantly shaking up the music, journalism, and art industries, this is perhaps the first time AI is directly disrupting politics. The 2024 American elections, according to Axios, are poised to be the first elections in the country to have AI-generated ads.
Seeing how “good” the video looked, one can predict that this is the first of many AI-generated political ads to come. So how far exactly can this go?
There are many available today, as said earlier, a plethora, including AI Image Generator By Fotor, NightCafe, Dream by WOMBO, DALL-E 2, and Midjourney to name a few of the most popular. Most of these models limit the creation of overtly political images.
As the verge outlines, Midjourney has banned the word “arrested”, as well as the generation of pictures involving Xi Jinping to “minimize drama.”
The ad’s use has also raised a rather worrying and complex issue in the form of deepfakes. While the Republican is as classy as an attack ad as an attack gets, it is true that the technology can be used to generate deep fakes of politicians to spread misinformation and even misrepresent their ideals.
So, how and where will the line be drawn, or better yet, is there a line at all? As the Verge reminds us, Meta, back in 2020, banned AI-generated content that would mislead users of the platform. However, Meta refused to respond to questions on whether the rule would apply to politics and politicians.
