The Netherlands Film industry is small. It faces several challenges. Among them: The Covid Pandemic and backing from the local market. The pandemic affected production and funds to invest have been diverted to the pandemic rather than the Industry. The local market is only now gaining attraction to the Dutch Film Industry, unlike the previous years.

However, there are pluses, as the Netherlands Film Fun is increasing its investment funds in projects to help Dutch Films gain a place in the International market.

Dutch directors together with their actors and actresses are slowly coming up and taking traction in the international limelight. Let’s look at some of the most famous Dutch actresses at the moment:

1. Carice Van Houten

Carice Anouk van Houten was born on 5th September 1976.

She is a Dutch actress and singer. Her first lead role in 1999 won her the Golden Calf for Best Acting in a Television Drama; two years later, she won the Golden Calf for Best Actress for Undercover Kitty (2001).

Black Book (2006) put her on the map and to date remains the most commercially successful Dutch film to date. It won her second Golden Calf for Best Actress.

She received international recognition for her role in the series Game of Thrones (2012–2019), for which she received nominations for two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series and a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

2.Famke Janssen

Famke Beumer Janssen was born in 1964. She is a Dutch actress and former fashion model.

She had a role in the X-Men film series (2000–2014), Nip/Tuck, and the Taken film trilogy (2008–2014).

In 2008, she was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for Integrity by the United Nations.

She is known for her roles in the Netflix original series Hemlock Grove and in How to Get Away with Murder.

She also starred in the 2017 NBC crime thriller The Blacklist: Redemption.

3.Chantal Janzen

Chantal Janzen was born on 15th February 1979. She is a Dutch actress, singer, and TV presenter.

She had parts in The Preacher, Full Moon Party, and Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo and presented Idols.

She also played Belle in the Dutch musical production of Beauty and the Beast. She was especially noted for being the first Belle with blonde hair. She also played Jane in Tarzan.

Internationally she’s best known for co-hosting Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light and the Eurovision Song Contest 2021.

4. Tara Elders

Tara Johanna Elders was born on 17th January 1980. She is a Dutch actress.

She was in the American film Interview (2007).

She has participated in minor roles in Dutch films all from 200-2008

5. Anneliese Van De Pol

Anneliese Louise van der Pol was born 23th September 1984. She is a Dutch-American actress and singer.

She is best known for her theatre work, and for a role in the Disney Channel series, That’s So Raven (2003–2007) and Raven’s Home (2017–2021).

Her films include the musical comedy film Bratz (2007), the spoof film Vampires Suck (2010), and the international-production 5 Weddings (2017).

She has recorded several songs for The Walt Disney Company.

6. Sylvia Hoeks

Sylvia Hoeks was born on 1st June 1983. She is a Dutch actress and former model.

She is best known internationally for her roles in Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and The Girl in the Spider’s Web (2018).

Her breakthrough came in the Jos Stelling film Duska (2007). She won a Golden Calf, the Dutch equivalent of an Academy Award, for Best Supporting Actress for the role.

She continued to star in several films including The Best Offer (2013), her first international role.

She is such a dedicated professional that in the film Blade Runner 2049 (2017), she trained with weights and in martial arts for six hours a day, six days a week before and during filming.

7. Kim Van Koote

Kim van Kooten was born on 26th January 1974 in Purmerend, North Holland. She is a Dutch actress and screenwriter.

In international cinema, knows her for playing the lead role in Phileine Says Sorry (2003).

She authored a script for the movie, Alles is Liefde, (Everything is Love) which was very successful.

She won a Golden Calf for Best Actress in Phileine Says Sorry (2003) and for Best Scenario with Met Grote blijdschap (2001).

8.Willeke van Ammelrooy

Willy Geertje van Ammelrooij was born on 5th April 1944).She is a Dutch actress and director.

She starred in the award-winning feminist film Antonia’s Line, which tells the story of an independent woman who, after returning to the anonymous Dutch village of her birth, establishes and nurtures a close-knit matriarchal community.

She received positive reviews and the Golden Calf for Best Actress for her performance and the film enjoyed critical success, including the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 68th Academy Awards. Emanuel Levy, writing for The Advocate, wrote “It’s easy to see why” the film was winning awards in festivals, calling it “an enchanting fairy tale that maintains a consistently warm, lighthearted feel,” and Willeke van Ammelrooy wonderful. Janet Maslin of The New York Times called it “a work of magical feminism.” The film was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it won the People’s Choice Award.

9.Sallie Harmsen

Sallie Harmsen was born on May 2nd, 1989. She is a Dutch actress.

She is best known for her role in In Real Life.

In 2015 it was announced that she would be co-starring with Robert de Hoog in a television series based on the American outlaws Bonnie and Clyde. She portrayed the female replica that was ‘born’ in the 2017 film Blade Runner 2049.

10. Loes Luca

Louise “Loes” Diana Wilhelmina Catharina Luca was born on 18th October 1953. She is a Dutch actress, singer, and comedian.

She began her career in the 1980s as a stage actress and singer in various musicals. She later started a successful film and television career.

She has starred in numerous films and television shows.

The Dutch Film Industry still has a lot of room to grow. It continues to show tremendous growth and is one to look out for in the coming years.
