1. National Autonomous University (UNAM)

The National Autonomous University of Mexico is a public research university in Mexico.

It has been ranking highly in world rankings; this is due to the university’s extensive research and innovation.

It is the biggest university in Latin America and has one of the vastest campuses in the world.

This university was initially known as the ‘Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico’. It was established in 1910 by the then minister of education, Justo Sierra.

He aimed at creating a Mexican institute of higher learning based on liberal values.

NAUM was then granted independence from government influence in 1929; this made the university gain more freedom regarding the school curriculum and budgetary management.

Other than offering degrees at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the university pays it forward to the community.

It runs programs in high schools that ensure the students are ready for higher education.

The main campus was designed by Mexico’s best architects and was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Other campuses are across Mexico and internationally in Texas, Illinois and Quebec.

The classes are conducted in Spanish, they therefore give a five-week intensive Spanish language classes for international students to polish up their grammar and understanding.

2. Metropolitan Autonomous University (UAM)

The Metropolitan Autonomous University of Mexico is also known as UAM. It is a public university that was founded in 1974 with the support of then-President Luis Echeverria Alvarez.

It is located in the urban area of the metropolis of Mexico City.

The institution has branch campuses in different locations; Azcapzalco, Iztapalapa, Cuajimalpa, Xochimilco, Lerma.

MUA is a large university that serves over 45,000 students that are pursuing their undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

Some of the other programs offered include higher education degrees such as pre-bachelor degrees like certificates, diplomas, and associate or foundation degrees.

The admission policy of this university is examination based, making it selective and quite competitive. International students are eligible to apply following the same process.

3. National Polytechnic Institute

This institution was established in 1936 as the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) it is a leading institute of public education in Mexico.

It aims to promote educational opportunities for everyone and help contribute to the social and economic development of Mexican society.

It is one of the biggest public universities in the country. It is also one of the only schools in the world with 19 technical high schools, 27 undergraduate schools, 20 research and higher education centers, and 16 centers for continuing education.

The specialized programs at IPN include; engineering, physics, mathematics, new technologies, medical and biological sciences, as well as social sciences.

This university currently ranks as the third best university in Mexico in engineering and technology according to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019.

The main campus is in Mexico City. There are 82 research units located across 23 other states in the country.

At least every course at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional is taught in Spanish. There are English-taught programs but those have very limited spaces.

4. Ibero-American University

Ibero-American University is one of the most prestigious universities in Mexico and Latin America.

It is a private institution of higher learning that is sponsored by the Society of Jesus. It is also recognized as having an international-grade level of excellence.

The university was established in 1943 by the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) as the Centro Cultural Universitario.

The project quickly flourished and became the Universidad Ibero-Americana after ten years. It offers programs in philosophy, chemistry, literature, and psychology.

The university has been running for more than 70 years actively participating in the social development of the country.

Currently, the university is one of the eight Jesuit institutions in the country. There are other similar institutions in Latin America and at least 220 worldwide.

At least 11,000 students call this university home. The faculty include than 2,000 external teachers, researchers, and academic faculty members.

IBERO has forged in academic innovation. There are currently 36 undergraduate programs, 23 master degrees, 7 doctoral degrees, and one specialization offered at the university.

The IBERO has 5 campuses: Mexico City (Santa Fe), León, Torreón, Puebla y Tijuana.

5. University of the Americas, AC

The Universidad de las Américas, Asociación Civil is a university founded in 1940 with the name of Mexico City College.

It changed its name in 1963 to the University of the Americas and in 1968 to Universidad de las Américas that exists to date.

The University of the Americas is a Private University with its headquarters located in Mexico City.

The University of the Americas does not currently offer online courses, all its classes are offered in the traditional learning system.

It offers its programs in both Spanish and English as the only higher learning institution in the country that has a bilingual program.

This prepares its graduates to become professionals with a good command of the English language that satisfies job requirement by most companies and productive projects in Mexico and the United States of America.
