Where to Eat Gluten Free in London

Traveling Europe, I repeatedly find that London is considered by many as the city most friendly to gluten free eaters.

While I don’t particularly enjoy gluten and will avoid it when I can, my relationship with it is not one of life or death, as it is for individuals with Celiacs. I’ve not spent much time considering how difficult it actually must be as a traveler to foreign lands with this disease, until now.

Niche Gluten-free Dining in London

If you ask London locals about gluten free dining, Niche is a name that comes up time and time again.

Not only is the entire menu gluten free, but the space is a charming, versatile lair ideal for a quick friends lunch or a romantic evening date. For a person with Celiacs I would imagine it’s so wonderful to be able to order anything on a menu without second or triple guessing yourself.

As far as I know this is probably the only place in London where you’ll find gluten free Eggs Benedict. I loved the gnocchi and the white bean toast.

The Modern Pantry in London

The Modern Pantry is the project of a renowned chef who wanted to work in a more easygoing, more tolerant dining space where people of all dietary restrictions could find something to suit their needs.

The menu is not solely gluten free, but it is very full of gluten free options and clearly marked. The kitchen itself is also safe to avoid contamination.

Andina in London

Andina is the light and bright Peruvian diner in Shoreditch. To make the cuisine accessible to everyone, there is a targeted gluten free menu that is just as good as the regular one.

In addition to this, the Andina kitchen is divided so that cross contamination risks are lowered. No utensil that touches gluten-present dishes will ever be used to make something from the gluten free menu.

Station 26 in London

A cosy, typically British spot in the heart of Brixton where the entire menu is gluten free. At Station 26 they serve brunch, lunch and dinners all completely safe to Celiacs individuals.

The menu also caters to both meat eaters and vegan/vegetarians. It’s inclusive dining at its best, and thankfully the food is as good as the concept.

Thinking back, I believe you can actually get those gluten free Eggs Bennys at this eatery as well! Note that there is only dinner service on Thursday and Friday evenings, the rest of the week is solely brunch and lunch.

There are a few great art house cinemas within close proximity to the Station 26. Date night?

Beyond Bread in London

I am told that bakeries are high risk environments for Celiac individuals purely because of how easy it is for loose flour to cross contaminate different things.

Beyond Bread is the answer to all risk elimination; it’s a completely gluten free bakery in Fitzrovia, London.

Again, this spot is always buzzing with people running in to grab a bite between their sight seeing and guided walking tours. They do wonderful bread loaves, cakes, sandwiches, pastries and tarts. It’s not the biggest space but there are a few tables for dining in; alternatively take your treats to the nearest park for an impromptu picnic.

Ethos Foods in London

So you’ve been in London a few days and you’ve noticed that the Brits really like their afternoon tea. One need not sit in on a formal high tea every afternoon, but casual, afternoon tea is an easy to enjoy experience on the regular.

Afternoon teas can be particularly tricky for gluten free eaters. As I said, baked goods are never the friendliest to anyone with issues in this area.

Ethos Foods is seeking to change this, and does an afternoon tea spread that will melt your heart. They have dedicated sections; one for regular tea treats, one for gluten free tea treats; and one for vegan tea treats.

It’s displayed like a grand buffet, and you’re welcome to all sections that are clearly marked for allergies. You’ll pay for your plate by weight and then kick back to enjoy your selection over a steaming pot of tea. Delightful, no?
