Weather in London in February

It is still the onset of wintertime in London in February. This is the codename for thinned out tourist crowds and better deals all the way, from flight bookings to London, accommodation, and tickets to places.

The weather while cold and sometimes wet may however occasionally open up to bursts of sunshine

The average temperatures range between 7 degrees Celsius (45 degrees Fahrenheit), and can go as low as 3 degrees Celsius (37 degrees Fahrenheit)

This weather welcomes museum and gallery visits as these are indoors, but you can as well sneak in outdoorsy activities especially with the right attire on.

The average rainfall is 16 days in the month, recorded at about 39 mm.

During your London visit in February, you are bound to experience some rain, as the 16 days of rain in the month are spread throughout the month. You, therefore, have to have an umbrella with you, a windproof one is always the better option.

What to Pack

While you may not necessarily want to carry woolen gloves, lighter leather gloves are a must-carry as the weather may expose your hands to cool dampness.  Pack a hat or two as well as a scarf. Don’t forget socks! If you have knee-high woolen socks, ones the better. You may also want to carry a few thermal pieces that don’t appear too bulky.

Layering up in London in February will do you good.  Long-sleeved t-shirts worn under down jackets would do the trick as you can easily take the jacket off when indoors without getting cold, as opposed to wearing a heavy sweater where you might get hot. However, lighter cardigans may be necessary.

Calf height waterproof boots are ideal to keep out the cold and damp.

For Women

Leggings are ideal as you can even wear them underneath your jeans if it gets too cold. The jeans will be suitable for taking walks and even better as they can be paired with different tops. However, opt for medium-dark blue or black jeans as opposed to distressed or acid-washed ones- remember you are in Europe hence aim for chic.

For Men

A classic Barbour jacket should make the cut for your London trip. A dark leather jacket paired with a plaid flannel underneath is also a good look and quite warm. Go for dark and plain colored jeans. Whatever shoes you carry, make sure they are waterproof.

Classic scarves will have you looking stylish yet give the much-needed warmth. A trench coat style raincoat will also be good for additional warmth.

Avoid

Leggings for women worn on their own as bottoms may not make the cut for London in winter as they are too casual.  Avoid graphic tees, sweats, and definitely stay away from anything baggy!

Events you should be aware of before planning your trip

There aren’t public holidays that may affect your plans really. However, as you plan your February stay in London, there are a number of events that you definitely may want to factor in.

Outside of Asia, London’s Lunar New Year festivities are the largest- the Chinese New Year is celebrated in February and you can witness the colorful celebrations in Chinatown, Trafalgar Square, and the West End. You can catch spectacular parades, performances and experience new cuisine during the celebrations.

The London Classic Car Show takes place in February. Here you should be able to view at least 700 classic cars! The indoor driving runway with the finest car races is a plus.

There are a number of theatre productions and musicals showing at London’s West End. You will not miss entertainment here. If you are into sports, soccer is big in London hence you can watch your favorite club play or tour a stadium. Rugby tournaments also take place around this time of year.

The thinner tourist crowds in London in February make it the opportune time to witness the Changing of the Guard ceremony that has taken place at the Buckingham Palace for years. You could also stay on at the Tower of London to witness another of London’s historical happenings- the Ceremony of the Keys.

Alternatively, you could attend the annual London Orchid Festival for a relaxing day looking at amazing flora from various parts of the world.

In February, take advantage of the thinner crowds and take in the best sights and sounds of London. If traveling with a spouse or partner, an evening city stroll ending in a romantic dinner at a London upscale restaurant may be the ultimate valentine’s day plan.
