Berners-Lee studied at The Queen’s College, Oxford. He is a known English computer scientist. He invented the World Wide Web browser system. This he did in the determination of coming up with a system to manage information.

Other than information management, he intended to meet the demand for automated information sharing among scientists. He has been awarded various awards for merit as well as appreciation.

These are inclusive of Internet Hall of Fame for Innovators, Queen Elizabeth Prize, and many more.

He established the World Wide Web Consortium located at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This is used to drive web advancement. It also offers free and open access to students with technology talents as well as interests.

Other than the Consortium, he is the founder and president of the Open Data Institute. He is currently an advisor at the social network MeWe. Being an important person, he has a trail of facts.

He is one of the living inventors who is currently at the age of 66 years. Berners-Lee is the man who developed the World Wide Web (WWW), web browser, the hypertext transfer protocol among others.

He was granted several rewards like the millennium technology prize, the president’s medal, Japan prize, among others.

2. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web out of frustration

The proposal of coming up with an information management software came out of frustration. This was caused by having to log in and out from different computers for access to different information.

At the time, he was working at CERN. This was Switzerland’s famous particle laboratory. He submitted his idea to his boss. The boss at the time, Mike Sendall, claimed that the proposal was vague but interesting. This indicated how positive and effective his proposal was.

He worked with help of his colleagues at CERN to write the code. At long last, he managed to accomplish his mission by coming up with the World Wide Web browser system.

3. Tim Berners-Lee created the first-ever website

The first email was sent way before the invention of the World Wide Web. However, after the invention, the sharing of information via the internet was highly upgraded. After the browser and servers were ready for use, the first website was launched.

The mother company of the invention became the first to be featured on the internet. On the 6th of August, 1991, Tim Berners-Lee and his team launched the http://info.cern.ch website.

4. Tim Berners-Lee together with the organization made the web accessible to everyone for free

After the development and initialization of the World Wide Web, its usage was restricted to Tim Berners-Lee together with other CERN researchers. Later on, he proposed they allow access to the rest of the public.

The organization supported him and in 1993, they allowed access to the web free of charge. After this, the web was advanced. The browser, as well as search engines, were developed around this period.

5. Tim Berners-Lee has been awarded several awards

After the popularity of his invention, Tim Berners-Lee has been attracting awards towards him in form of appreciation. These as been from groups as well as organizations. Some awards were merit awards.

The awards include the ACM Software System Award (1995), Order of Merit (2007), Foreign Associate of the National Academy of Sciences (2009), Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering (2013), Turing Award (2016), and many more.

6. Tim Berners-Lee is a leader of several organizations

After his invention, he founded an organization, the World Wide Web Consortium, to manage the World Wide Web operations. Tim Berners-Lee leads the organization. In addition, he is the director of The Web Science Research Initiative (WSRI).

Other than the two, he is also a delegate member of the advisory board of the MIT Centre for Collective Intelligence. Time Magazine named him one of the 100 Most Important People in the United Kingdom as well as the whole world of the 20th century.

7. Tim Berners-Lee was not aimed to gain profit from his invention

Unlike several inventors like Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Alan Sugar, Tim Berners-Lee’s invention was meant to help. In several interviews, he claimed to have been in the right place at the right time.

His character of being kind is seen by being among those who approved the public to have free access to the web browser. This kindness has gained him the title of ‘the unsung hero of the information age.’ He also maintains a very low status, unlike many inventors.

8. Tim Berners-Lee established Web Consortium to offer free training

The consortium is well known for leading the advancement operations of the web. Tim Berners-Lee set it in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This was following his vision to make it open and free for the students to get access to great technology.

He believes technological talents should be admired and appreciated. He has fought in a unique way to keep the World Wide Web open, non-proprietary, and free. These have made it so easy for web technology to be adopted by anyone.

He was born to Mary Lee Woods and Conway Berners-Lee. They were both computer scientists as well as mathematicians. The two were among the fore bench members who joined hands to develop a computer.

They developed the world’s first computer, the Ferranti Mark 1. This can be counted as one of the inspirations that made Tim Berners-Lee take his career root. When he was in college, Berners-Lee made a computer out of an old TV set.

However, by the time he was developing the web, there had been several developments in the computer world.

He used a NeXt computer which was developed by Steve Jobs.

Tim’s Greatest Achievements

One of the most important inventions in modern history, the World Wide Web, is credited to Sir Tim Berners-Lee as its creator. His greatest accomplishment was developing the first web browser and web server, which allowed for the remarkable sharing and dispersal of knowledge around the world. The way we work, learn, and engage with the world around us has been revolutionised by Sir Tim’s invention, which has made it possible for billions of people to access information and connect with one another.
