The Best Buffet Eateries in London

I love a good buffet, especially in London Town where eating out can tend to cost you a small fortune.

I wouldn’t say the Brits are big on buffet dining; it’s more the international cuisines that have brought this trend into the city. Buffets are not as readily available as you might expect in a city of this magnitude.

Here are a few worth checking out if this is your dining experience of preference.

Tibits in London

Tibits is the vegetable sensation eatery that has taken the Soho restaurant scene by storm.  It’s the new “it” place to eat, whether you’re a veggie or not, because the planet is dying and we all need to do our part.

This buffet is impressive; never have you seen so many plant based creations in one space. On Tuesdays the entire menu is vegan only, and the rest of the week it’s a vegan/vegetarian fusion.

The Mughal’s Indian Restaurant in London

There are few things as satisfying as a well done Indian buffet. The Mughal’s sits just outside the northern boundary of Hyde Park, and welcomes you for steamy curry after a long day of sightseeing or guided walking tours in the chilly London air.

The buffet takes place daily during lunch time, or all day on Sundays. If you want to eat at the Sunday evening buffet for dinner you will need to make a reservation, preferably a few days in advance as it tends to sell out.

Get some of the korma, the aloo and the yellow dal on your plate all at once; a symphony of curry pleasure, as my friend so eloquently put it.

Preto Victoria in London

Most Brazlian barbecue restaurants are run as buffet eateries. If you’re a meat fan, then you’re likely familiar with this cuisine; large, long skewers of meats that are walked through the restaurant and carved at your table as you like.

The rest of the buffet will be elsewhere in the space; a bar of salads and sides that you can enjoy at your leisure.

Fifteen different types of meat will be brought round the room, and you can have as much as you like. Pace yourself.

Lutong Pinoy in London

Who would have thought South Kensington to be the home of London’s own Filipino buffet restaurant?

I am still largely unfamiliar with this cuisine; it’s not one I’ve encountered often during my travels so I know fairly little about whether a spot is authentic or not, but I do know if a meal is enjoyable and at Lutong Pinoy it definitely is.

The buffet takes place during lunch time. It is not mandatory and you’ll also have the option of dining a la carte if you wish. This is probably the only place in London where you can dine traditional “kamayan”, which is a Filipino way of eating with one’s hands over banana leaves.

222 Vegan Cuisine in London

London’s vegan and vegetarian spots are embracing buffet dining far more frequently than any other cuisines.

222 is a fully plant based, fully conscious restaurant that serves cruelty free, sustainable meals seven days a week. Lunch time is when their buffet takes place. Unfortunately their top seller, their tofu curry, is not included in the buffet and must be ordered separately.

The lunch buffet will cost just £9.50 per person. By night the restaurant takes a more romantic turn and serves their full menu by candlelight.

Haweli in London

Haweli is an Indian fusion kitchen that does a full buffet on Sunday evenings. It’s a big shame that they don’t offer one every day, I’d gladly make the journey out to Ealing more often if they did.

The experience costs just £10.95 per person and involves the following: as many popadoms, samosas and onion barjis as you can handle, your choice of any three meat curries or any three vegetarian curries, sides of rice, naan breads and sambals, & to end things off some tasty ice cream at the end.

Ai Sushi in London

I have my qualms when it comes to sushi buffets as the idea of raw fish sitting out in the open for hours on end seems fairly dangerous. Ai Sushi must agree, because despite being a buffet diner, your sushi is made to order.

The restaurant is in north London: a great area for Asian food, cemeteries and guided walking tours.

How the buffet works is you are instructed to order just four plates at a time. Your order is prepared fresh, as regular sushi dining would be, and brought to the table. At which time you’ll be permitted to order your next four that will be prepared while you eat. It’s revolutionary, I tell you.
