6 Great Mexican Restaurants in London

Nothing screams night out on London Town quite like tacos, margaritas and sugary sweet churros! Okay, maybe high tea, fish, chips and mushy peas is a bit more on brand, but Mexican food is just so much more fun. And lucky for us there are a plethora of authentic spots in which to enjoy it scattered around the city.

When you’re ready to put down the tea cup, follow me for a real Central American fiesta…

Corazón in London

I’ve spoken about Corazón before; it’s Soho’s Mexican gem and it has seen fast popularity since the week it opened.

The menu is very short, which I prefer when it comes to this cuisine. Having to choose whether you want your beans in a taco, or a burrito, or a bowl, or an empanada, or in a quesadilla, or enchilada, or fajita, or… or… or… can be extremely overwhelming.

At Corazón you’ll choose beef, chicken or vegetarian fillings in your choice of tacos or enchiladas; simple as that. They also have speciality dishes like grilled fish, pozole soup, braised lamb and some sort of patatas bravas type side dish that blew my mind.

I wouldn’t say booking is essential, but this spot is right next to the Soho theatre and can full up very quickly on show nights. Bare this in mind — or consider catching a show yourself!

Cafe Pacifico in London

Cafe Pacifico was one of the pioneers for Mexican food in the British capital. They have been here since 1982, having found their forever home in an abandoned banana warehouse near Trafalgar Square.

This is the spot you pair with a guided walking tour of the neighborhood; both are unmissable while in London!

I’ll be frank and admit this is far from the most authentic Mexican food you’ll find in the city. The menu has too much Tex-Mex influence going on. But the price and ambiance of the space make up for this lapse in authenticity, and it’s a wholesome, enjoyable dining experience regardless.

Ella Canta in London

Another Mexican restaurant best paired with a guided walking tour around Hyde Park; Ella Canta sits right on the Hyde Park Corner metro station.

This is fine Mexican dining at its ultimate. Ella Canta is the baby of renowned Mexican chef Martha Ortiz who finally laughed this venue in London after years of menu preparation.

Consider it a traveling treat; something new and unusual instead of blowing hundreds of pounds drinking Old Fashioneds on a rooftop somewhere in Chelsea. You’ll be wined and dined while simultaneously connecting to a culture you likely rarely get the chance to — it’s swell, as the Brits would say.

Wahaca Covent Garden in London

Taking things down a budget range or two (or five), Wahaca is right by Covent Garden and is known as the go-to for decent Mexican diner food in London.

The menu is simple and everything is well paired with any of their house cocktails, of which they are also famous for. I’m not usually one for chicken in tacos but their buttermilk pollo? To die for.

Highly recommend the sweet potato taquitos, too. And the fish burrito. And the broccoli side. In fact, why don’t we just dine together so I can back seat drive your entire meal?

Mestizo Mexican Restaurant in London

I’ll start by saying that any internet photos of Mestizo do it absolutely no justice; it appears to be cold and informal, when in real life it is anything but.

That’s how I found Mestizo, trolling the internet for good Mexican near Regent’s Park.

This cosy spot might be the most authentic representation of Mexican cuisine in all of London. I know this because I was seated next to a Mexican couple who kept making this remark over, and over… I guess they’d been on the hunt during their vacation.

Huge portions, wonderful atmosphere, do not ask for nachos — this is a curse word in an authentic Mexican restaurant!

Santo Remedio – Cocina Mexicana in London

Santo Remedio is modern Mexican; which means they’ve taken traditional Mexican dishes and twisted them here and there.

If you’re able to overlook the inauthenticity then the food is really quite phenomenal. Hibiscus flower enchiladas? Why didn’t I think of that.

At lunch time you can enjoy their £15.50 three course lunch special. Something authentic that they do offer is a pork belly taco; this is an important dish in Mexico.

This is a great spot to dine with friends before a night on the town, or perhaps a theatre show on the West End nearby.
