If you’re a foodie there’s no better place than London’s food markets, which you can discover all over the city, with almost every cuisine available. Here are a selection of some of the best food markets in London.

1. Borough Market

Probably the most well known food market in London, Borough Market has been around since the 11th Century. With more than 100 different stalls, from fresh fruit and veg, street food from around the world, butchers, cheeses, pâtisseries and much more, Borough Market is a food lover’s paradise.

Today the market feels more like an attraction than a market but is definitely a place to visit and experience all the great tasting food on offer, especially on an empty stomach. If you want to avoid the crowds the best time to visit is in the morning or late afternoon, around 4pm.

2. Brick Lane Market

Brick Lane is another immensely popular market. The market is a favourite among bargain hunters as it is full of antiques, fabrics and collectibles. It also has an amazing variety of street food and a great place to grab a bite after browsing. The market comes alive on Sundays where you can try all sorts of culinary specialities from around the world, including Indian street food, Chinese dumplings, Turkish dishes and much more.

3. Maltby Street Market

Tucked away in a tangle of streets between London Bridge and Bermondesy stations is Maltby Street Market, which may be hard to find, but once you discover it there’s no shortage of stalls. The market is centred along a long alley called Ropewalk, where you’ll find around 30 stalls nestled beneath the railway arches.

The Market can be considered a quieter and calmer version of Borough Market as it has only been running since 2010 and many tourists are yet to discover its existence. So if you want to visit somewhere quieter this is a great place to explore.

4. Broadway Market

Located in London Fields, Hackney, Broadway Market is a bustling hub on Saturdays. It has over 100 stalls including plenty of tasty street food ranging from toasted sandwiches, crab cake burgers, vegan pancakes and chocolate eclairs.

The market has been around since the 1890s but nearly closed down in the 1980s due to a lack of trade. It relaunched in 2004 with a makeover leading to many new stalls, now becoming one of the trendiest food markets in London. Among the popular stalls here are Violet Cakes, which sells a range of tasty treats.

5. Mercato Metropolitano

Located in Elephant & Castle, is this rather spacious food market45,000 sq feet. Once a disused paper factory, it is now home to more than 40 vendors, as well as a microbrewery and community projects. There’s even a courtyard with a double-decker bus that has been transformed into a farm, where you can pick your own strawberries.

As the name suggests there’s plenty of Italian food here, from fresh pizza, authentic gelato and pasta, but there’s also plenty of others from Turkish, Indian, Mexican, and Lebanese cuisines all having stalls here. There’s also many workshops taking place including wine tasting and pasta making.

6. Old Spitalfields Market

This market has been around for hundreds of years but with such a huge choice of street available, it’s now more delicious than ever. Tucked in the north-eastern corner of the market are the kitchens, which is made up of 10 street food vendors set around communal tables. Some of the favourites include Dumpling Shack, famous for its handmade crispy soup dumplings. Other popular places include Poppies Fish and Chips, Bleecker and Dirty Bagel.

7. Berwick Street Market

One of the more centrally located food markets, located in the heart of Soho, Berwick Street Market has been around since the 1700s, making it one of London’s oldest markets. Here you will find around 20 different stalls, although a few traditional fruit and veg sellers remain, most of the stalls offer trendy street food. It is especially popular during lunch time for nearby workers and tourists in the area. Some of the favourites include Wow Shees, Freebird Burritos and The Jerk Drum.

8. Pop Brixton

Pop Brixton is a popular market hosting a variety of stalls including many street vendors in old shipping containers.  Working with the local council it is a community initiative dedicated to help support local independent businesses, giving them the space they need to thrive. Some popular stalls worth trying include Sakeya, a Japanese fish bar, Viet Box, a modern a take on traditional Vietnamese cuisine and Mama’s Jerk, modern Caribbean street food.

9. Camden Market

Camden is another famous market, well known for its vintage clothes and knick knacks, as well as of course,  its street food. It recently underwent a revamp, seeing an increase in vendors selling a variety of cuisines and styles that are also genuinely creative and imaginative. It’s a great place to grab a bite to eat especially in the summer, where there many places around the canal to enjoy the sunshine.
