10 Things to Eat in Shoreditch

So you’ve made it to Shoreditch. You’ve done Brick Lane, browsed the flower market, likely bought a vintage items or two, and now it’s time to eat.

You should know that Brick Lane is filled with street food offering cuisines from around the world. But eating outside isn’t for everyone, and those who want to dine in have another plethora of cuisines to choose from. Here is what to expect:

1. Peruvian: Andina in Shoreditch

To give you an idea of just how diverse the food culture is in Shoreditch, I’ll start with Peruvian!

This South American eatery specializes in Peruvian ceviche, traditional dishes and classic cocktails. There are great meat options and equally as great vegetarian options; vegans can manipulate dishes quite easily.

The restaurant is next to the Boxpark in Shoreditch; another attraction not to be missed while you roam the area.

2. Turkish: Oklava in Shoreditch

Oklava might easily be the most expensive Turkish dining experience you ever have, but at least it will be worth it.

The cauliflower dish is a must, as is their Lahmacun. For lunch it’s alright to walk in, but for dinner I would recommend making a reservation; particularly over the weekends.

This is one of the only restaurants in Shoreditch that doesn’t open on Sundays or Mondays.

3. Pizza: Homeslice in Shoreditch

I thought I knew pizza, and then I ate at Homeslice.

These are wood fire pizzas like you’ve never seen them before. Firstly, they are massive. A single slice is bigger than an entire plate; you’re best dining here with a friend or two to share with.

Second of all, the taste, the dough, the toppings… unfathomable. Chewy in the right places, crunchy in others. Definitely the best pizza I’ve found in London; comparable to pizzas in Tuscany.

4. Basque: Sagardi in Shoreditch

Spanish cuisine is easy to find in London, one guided walking tour through the center and you’ll pass by two or three. But Basque food is a bit less frequent.

Basque Country is the norther part of Spain, and the cuisine has it’s own very distinct characteristics that differ from traditional Spanish.

Sagardi is top quality Basque food in an unassuming, laid back eatery in Shoreditch. The menu encompasses a lot of meats; options for vegetarians and vegans are limited.

5. Thai: Som Saa Thai in Shoreditch

I often get made fun of for how often I insist on eating at Som Saa when in Shoreditch. Without sounding too dramatic, the Thai food is phenomenal. The plating itself will leave young wanting to disrupt the beauty of the dish.

I am addicted to their Pad Thai, and if booking in advance weren’t absolutely essential here I would eat it every time I found myself on a spontaneous Shoreditch adventure.

They do offer lunch service a few days a week; it’s better to look this up on the day.

6. Vegan: Vegan Yes in Shoreditch

Vegans thrive in Shoreditch; being cruelty free is in, and Shoredicth is one with the trends.

To keep things interesting, Vegan Yes takes a very different approach to vegan cafe dining. This is an Italian and Korean fusion kitchen, where everything is entirely plant based.

It’s as good as it sounds; so good that most of their clientele aren’t even vegan out in the real world, they just love the food! The chef is the owner, and is very gentle & informative with the dietary needs of everyone who walks through the door. Let’s all show her some love while we are in town.

7. Tacos: DF Tacos in Shoreditch

DF Tacos is the best off-street street food in all of the Shoreditch area. The restaurant itself is Mexican, with an extensive menu to match; but I wouldn’t bother with anything other than the tacos!

It’s refreshing to find a taco shop in London that doesn’t skimp on their portions. They are generous, they are filling, they are delicious… and on Mondays they are half price.

8. Lebanese: Fennec & Parsley in Shoreditch

This snug little spot is one of the most unassuming restaurants in all of Shoreditch. What you see is what you get, literally.

You’ll plate your choices of authentic Lebanese dishes by pointing out each one from behind the counter. Their falafel is great; pair it with salads, pita and two dips of your choice!

9. Traditional British: The Princess of Shoreditch in Shoreditch

A lot of Brits like to come into Shoreditch on Sundays for a good old Sunday roast. This dish is a tradition in most households across the UK, and a lot of restaurants have adopted it so that travelers can get involved.

The Princess of Shoreditch is traditional British cuisine. The space is an old renovated pub with two stories. For Sunday roasts you’ll need to book in advance; the rest of the week you can walk in unannounced and it shouldn’t be a problem getting a table.

10. Pancakes: The Book Club in Shoreditch

There’s nothing like a chilly winter’s morning in Shoreditch paired with a warm cafe, steaming hot tea and a stack of fluffy pancakes.

The Book Club is my favorite cafe in the district. It’s a cafe combined with a creative space in which they host regular poetry readings, book signings and musical events. There is even a ping pong room in the back.

Pancakes are hot on the grill from the minute they open.
