Wine Farms Near Lisbon

If you’re a wine drinker, then a trip to Portugal isn’t complete if you haven’t yet connected with the countries wine making culture.

The Portuguese are lovers of good coffee and good wine; these come standard with any traditional meal experience, particularly at dinner time.

There are many wine tasting experiences available in the city center of Lisbon . Here you’ll taste locally produced wines under the guidance of professionals who can give you information on each grape and fermentation process.

Taking a day trip out to one of the actual wine farms near Lisbon offers a fuller bodied Portuguese wine tasting experience (pun intended). It’s also a chance to see the beautiful countryside and natural wonders that make up this historic land.

These are a few wine farms near Lisbon that I found most enjoyable.

Bacalhôa Vinhos de Portugal near Lisbon

The grounds of the Bacalhôa Vinhos are interesting because they hold a wine farm, a palace and a museum all at once.

The farm is accessed by taking the Pont de 25 Abril bridge across the Tagus River, into the deep south of Lisbon. It’s a Renaissance wine estate; a place of natural beauty and endless charm.

The estate was formally property of the royals back in the 15th century. To properly experience al that Bacalhôa Vinhos has to offer, you’ll be taken on a lengthy guided tour of all the different components of the estate. The art museum is an unexpected yet welcome addition to an already fascinating tour.

The tour of the Bacalhôa Vinhos ends with a wine tasting experience on the farm.

Quinta do Piloto – Vinhos near Lisbon

The town of Palmela is also directly south of Lisbon and can be accessed easily by bus. There are a number of wine farms within the town, but the Quinta do Polito is the easiest to access upon arrival.

This Portuguese wine farm has been in production for over one hundred years. The tour experience is one of in-depth knowledge about the process of growing grapes and making wines in Portugal; and you are physically shown the processes every step of the way.

Regional de Colares Winery near Lisbon

Sintra is about 45 minutes outside of Lisbon and is known for its fairytale landscapes including mountains, valleys, forests and oceans.

No surprise the that Sintra also holds some of the finest wine farms near Lisbon. The Regional de Colares Winery is a picturesque piece of land with an interesting story behind it.

Technically wine shouldn’t be able to be produced in this part of Sintra, but the Regional de Colares Winery found a way to grow vines in the sandy soil that covers this land through to the ocean.

Quinta do Gradil near Lisbon

For this next wine farm I highly recommend hiring a car for the day if you are in a position to do so. The farm is an hour north of Lisbon, but the drive itself comprises a large part of the overall experience; hence why having a car would be most ideal!

The Quinta do Gradil is one of the biggest producers of wine near Lisbon, and they are also a popular wedding venue for Portuguese destination weddings.
