Where to Hold Children’s Birthday Parties in Lisbon
Entertaining children in Lisbon isn’t easy, but not entirely impossible either. Lisbon has a reputation of being more of a retirement village rather than a youthful hub, and so large groups of little ones (like during birthday parties) can be difficult to navigate through the city center.
Make no mistake, travelers with children will have no trouble finding things to do or child friendly restaurants and retail stores — it’s just large groups at the same time that need a bit more thought and planning.
I’ve scrambled the city and interrogated numerous local parents about how they personally handle their little one’s day of birth each year — here are the most popular and recommended options.
Party in the Park at the Jardim da Estrela in Lisbon
When there is lack of either suitable activity or sufficient funds, parent’s in Lisbon take things old school and opt for the age old party in the park.
It is definitely the most affordable birthday party to be had in Lisbon for children, especially if you keep things simple. Since the park will provide all the entertainment one really needs, all that’s left are some picnic blankets, snacks and perhaps a couple of balloons.
The Jardim da Estrela is the favorite park in the city center. It is also the most ideal park in which to orchestrate a children’s birthday party because of the large public play area that they have on offer.
Arrive early and pick a spot close to the playpen. Parks are wonderful for parties because you are free to take up as much space as necessary to accommodate the amount of children invited, and entrance is absolutely free!
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday – 7am to 12am
ADDRESS: Praça da Estrela n°12, 1200-694 Lisboa, Portugal
METRO STATION: Santos
Day Trip Party to the Beach in Cascais Near Lisbon
Staying in the city for one’s birthday is great; it’s your comfort zone, and one could easily make their child’s day extra special by wandering through the center, eating at different restaurants, shopping for gifts in Chiado or even embarking on a free guided walking tour to see things you may have overlooked previously.
Getting out of the city makes an equally great birthday, however, as the beaches of Cascais are but a train ride from Cais do Sodré station.
With parent’s permission, gather a group of your little ones friends and treat them to a day at the beach, including the forty minute train ride and back. Kids love taking trains, so the fun starts before they even reach the water.
Cascais has many beaches on offer but the main one just opposite the train station where you arrive into would be the most suitable for groups of children.
The beach offers a floating playground out in the bay where children get signed up, given a life jacket and are then free to play on all the inflatable objects throughout the day. It’s hours and hours of fun, you’ll have to do very little in terms of hospitality at this birthday party.
Remember, the last train back to Lisbon departs at 9pm! Don’t miss it.
Hippotrip Birthday Party with Kids in Lisbon
I’ve been strongly advised by a mother that this next birthday party excursion is only suitable for children around aged 7 and up, for younger ones it can be slightly boring!
The Hippotrip is the new touring experience that has taken Lisbon by storm. It is the first tour company to be able to offer both a land and water based tour of Lisbon, without riders ever having to change vehicles/vessels.
Yes, you read that correctly. The Hippotrip is a tourbus that will sweep you around the cities most prominent sights before heading to the Tagus water and driving straight down a ramp and into the river.
It’s a bus/boat hybrid, and alternates between the two without a moments hesitation.
The trip is wonderful for curious children in as big or as small of a group as you may require. A real adventure themed party all over the city of Lisbon.
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday – 9am to 6pm
ADDRESS: Doca de Santo Amaro, Edifício Hippotrip, Lisboa, 1350-353 Lisboa, Portugal
METRO STATION: Alcantara-Mar
Fun Day Out at the Oceanário de Lisboa in Lisbon
The decision to add an aquarium to the land during the construction of the Parque das Nações neighborhood in Lisbon was one of the best decisions that the city ever made .
The Oceanário de Lisboa is without a doubt one of the most impressive attractions the city has to offer. It is the largest aquarium in Europe, an absolutely mind blowing space to behold even as an adult.
There are thousands of marine animals and plants to be discovered here. For kids it’s heaven, and taking big groups along for birthday party fun is easy to coordinate since the Parque das Nações isn’t too far from Lisbon’s center.
This excursion can rack up quite a bill, however. Tickets for kids between 4 and 12 years old pay €12 each. For anyone 13 years or older it’s €17.
Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday – 10am to 6pm
ADDRESS: Esplanada Dom Carlos I s/nº, 1990-005 Lisboa, Portugal
METRO STATION: Cabo-Ruivo
Science Fueled Birthday at the Pavilhão do Conhecimento in Lisbon
The aquarium is located in a developmental block within the Parque das Nações called the Pavilion of Knowledge.
In the same pavilion there is Lisbon’s Science Alive Center; an interactive contemporary science museum with departments dedicated to the involvement of children in the science world.
Kids are included in a full day of workshops and inclusive museum experiences in which their minds are stretched wide open through the world of science. The perfect day out for a birthday party group!
