Where to Do Yoga in Lisbon
Having recently taken up yoga, I was forced to brave the many studios of Lisbon in search of one best suited to my needs (and my patience).
What a journey this was. I believe there to be more yoga studios in Lisbon’s city centre than cod fish in Lisbon’s port. Every corner proved to hold a yoga space all promising the best in the biz.
Here are the few I deem most worth of your time and money. Stay on lookout for an up and coming article where I will humorously disclose where not to try yoga in Lisbon and why.
Gaia – Hatha Yoga Center in Lisbon
Generally great yoga studios can be found lingering in university towns with strong student presence. Students, god bless ‘em, have time to shavasana their way through 6am before strolling over to their daily classes.
Gaia, I was told, was the “it” spot in Lisbon’s university district of Santa Cruz .
I enjoyed how the teachers at Gaia focus on each student individually and acknowledge that not everyone is able to perform at the same level in each class. They work one on one when necessary to make sure you are actually learning the correct posture and positions.
Had I found Gaia as my first yoga studio attempt in Lisbon I wouldn’t have needed to look elsewhere. A great space for the practice of Hatha yoga.

Casa Vinyasa in Lisbon
The first day I walked into Casa Vinyasa I think my jaw hit the floor. The studio is built inside of an old Portuguese apartment building, with the interior of the apartment gutted to create space for the flow.
It is the most beautiful and calming yoga space I’ve seen in a while; happy to get up at the crack of dawn just to be in it.
This is a studio of Ashtanga yoga, and for those who are unfamiliar with this style, it is one of the more challenging yogic practices.
Ashtanga is full force, repetitive and very much your own journey despite practice with full classrooms full of people. The teachers are incredibly kind and patient; and they love having travelers to Lisbon come in for single sessions if they so desire.
There are options for both Portuguese and English conducted classes.

Hotpod Yoga Lisbon in Lisbon
Even further north of the city center I managed to find a yoga studio that is creating a unique, futuristic practice space in the form of a yoga pod.
These pods are basically blow up domes that are then filled with hot air for the duration of the yoga session that takes place inside of them. Doing yoga in a heated environment is supposed to be a transcendent experience and particularly effective when combined with breath work.
Doing yoga at Hotpod is a complete sensory overload that leaves you floating in the clouds once you eventually walk out. I believe it to be one of the best forms of yoga for rapid street relief and detoxification of the skin.
It is always important that this kind of yoga be performed safely, and Hotpod is providing this space.

Agora Yoga Lisboa in Lisbon
The yoga studios in the far north impressed me, but I needed something a little closer to the city center if I was going to stick to my daily practice promise to myself.
Agora is a beautiful little studio that I found right on the northern boundary of the Alfama. They offer a range of different yogic practices on site, but their restorative yoga class was truly mind blowing.
In addition to a yoga class schedule, Agora also offers sessions in guided meditation. This is unique and not something I was able to find elsewhere in Lisbon. There is a strong sense of home from the moment you arrive at this studio, and students are encouraged to connect with one another both before and after classes.

Little Yoga Space in Lisbon
Lisbon is endlessly surprising and there are few historic city centers in Europe where you’ll see a street with free guided walking tours coming down one side, and a group of individuals carrying yoga mats down the other.
Something for everyone, especially in Chiado where the Little Yoga Space is situated.
The studio is one of the better known ones in Lisbon and also the one with the least amount of permanent students. The nature of this area is “in ’n out”, with few travelers sticking around longer than a week before moving on to their next destination.
So the Little Yoga Space has embraced the drop in nature of their clientele and offer each class at just €10 any time.
Their focus is on Vinyasa, Hatha and Kundalini yoga and they regularly offer workshops and retreats for anyone who will be around Lisbon at the time. Get onto their social media to see what is on offer and how you can get involved.
