Our Recommended 4 Star Hotels in Lisbon

The jump between 4 and 5 star hotels in Lisbon is quite a big one; this is something I have come to notice over time as I’ve had more and more adventures through the city.

5 star accommodation in Portugal is luxury at its finest. The old palaces and castles of the country were quickly identified as suitable grounds for opulent hotel establishments for big spending travelers.

4 star accommodation in Portugal, Lisbon in particular, usually offers excellent hospitality, clean living and wonderful buffet breakfasts — but the extravagance and facilities are far behind what the luxury hotels put on display.

I actually find 3 star and 4 star hotels in Lisbon to often be on par with one another, with the only difference lying in the price and sometimes the location. Nevertheless, here are our favorite 4 star hotels and what they have to offer during your stay in the Portuguese capital!

Hotel Lisboa Plaza in Lisbon

I love the Hotel Lisboa Plaza; I love that it is in quiet, old Lisbon north, far enough from the chaotic streets of the city center but still in walking distance of Chiado and Bairro Alto. I love that the building was constructed in 1954. I love that the hotel is within walking distance of two of Lisbon’s arthouse cinemas.

As far as interiors go, the Plaza is neat and modern. Simple furniture, warm tones and touches of dark wood wherever possible. It’s a charming space to return home to each evening.

Their rooftop terrace is a big hit amongst guests. It’s filled with couches and loungers that you can use to your heart’s content.

The Plaza offers a computer room with internet access and PC’s for anyone who needs to do work during their stay. These rooms are common in 4 star hotels around the city; it’s a nice touch that allows guests to not have to work where they sleep.

Memmo Alfama Hotel in Lisbon

I like to point out the Memmo hotel during free guided walking tours through Lisbon’s Alfama. It’s one of the best 4 star hotels in the city, largely due to its impressive rooftop swimming pool that overlooks the entire old town.

The Memmo hotel group have a few properties around the city center; they are all known for their unique swimming facilities which, if you’ve ever been in Lisbon in the summer, is an absolute anomaly of a hotel attraction.

The Memmo, particularly the location in the Alfama, is difficult to get a booking at as they are full most of the peak season.

The hotel is right in the thick of Lisbon’s historic district and it’s a wonderful area to stay in for that real, old town Portugal feel.

Rooms are small, but sufficient for an intimate and semi-luxurious hotel stay in the city center. The staff at Memmo are attentive to detail and make each guest feel as at home as they can.

Portugal Boutique Hotel in Lisbon

If you like being in the center of the destinations to which you travel; if you like attractions to be within walking distance; if you don’t mind perpetually crowded streets — then Lisbon’s Rossio/Chiado neighborhood is just for you .

The Portugal Boutique Hotel is the 4 star gem right in the heart of the city center.

The rooms are small and slightly more modern-kitsch than you’d probably expect from a hotel with the name of Portugal. It’s a well run establishment with an attractive outdoor terrace used for dining and relaxation.

The location is prime, and your back (and front) yard is Lisbon’s most exciting neighborhood; an area filled with shopping, restaurants, nightlife, ancient churches and the most beautiful tiled architecture you’ll find.

Average Cost: €120 per night
ADDRESS: R. João das Regras 4, 1100-294 Lisboa, Portugal
Metro STATION: Martim Moniz

Heritage Avenida Liberdade in Lisbon

Moving just slightly further north, the Heritage Avenida Liberdade Hotel is one of my personal 4 star favorites.

What you’ll notice first is the beautiful architectural dream that is the 18th century building that hotels the hotel within. It was the work of a very famous architect named Miguel Cancio Martins, and at the time of its creation it was seen as a risqué take on building design.

The interiors remain classically Portuguese. I find this hotel to be in prime location for families traveling with children as it is bordered by two parks on the east and western sides.

The center is a short walk south, taking you directly into Chiado where more entertainment awaits.

Average Cost: €170 per night
ADDRESS: Av. da Liberdade 28, 1250-145 Lisboa, Portugal

Solar do Castelo in Lisbon

This last 4 star hotel is somewhat of a dream. It is the old hotel built within the São Jorge Castle walls in Lisbon.

The old castle is situated in the north of the Alfama and used to be known as the Royal Palace. This mansion that holds the hotel was built in the palaces kitchen wing, and is now one of the most romantic 4 star stays available in Lisbon.

The grounds are immaculate; soft, traditional tiles, gardens of cacti, water features here and there. It’s a tranquil little setting in an already laid back part of the city center. Ideal for honeymooners, lovers or old friends on a Portuguese adventure.

Also, peacocks roam the grounds; 4 star luxury meets wildlife in Lisbon.
