Sicily is endowed with an “Oral and Intangible Heritage for Humanity” protected by Unesco.
The Sicilian puppet theatre is part of it.
The “cuntastorie” (aka storytellers) through the puppets known as “pupi”, stage the stories of the “Chanson de Roland” and other works. In conclusion, you must visit their theatre, you will find them all around but also especially in Palermo.

2. Sicilian Archaeology

Sicily is known for being an open-air archaeological site.
I recommend you visit the archaeological park of Patti. Here you will find the remains of a beautiful Roman villa. The villa was built on the remains of an ancient building. You will find mosaics and widespread remains in the park to admire and photograph while walking around.
If you are interested in something paleontological then you can admire the Grotta di San Teodoro in the Acquedolci area. Where you will even find the remains of hippos and tools used for hunting.

There are a lot of beautiful places to visit all around the island. Just check on the web site VisitSicily for more information.

3. The Sicilian villages

Sicily is entirely dotted with villages full of stories.
For this reason, I recommend you to go through these small villages to learn something about their history and origins.
There are small towns located right near the sea, perched on the mountains or in the Sicilian hinterland.
Uncontaminated places are suitable for rest and fun with the family or for a romantic holiday.

4. Sicilian flavours

Sicilian food is magic for your taste buds! Among the desserts, you must absolutely taste the Sicilian cannoli, the cassata and my favourite the granita!
You cannot complain, you will return home full and happy!
Without forgetting the almond and its “pasta” with which sweets are made for every occasion. If you prefer salty foods then you must try the arancini, the caponata or the parmigiana.
And if you are a fan of pasta then you should definitely not miss the fantastic “pasta alla norma”.

5. The “Baroque Art” in the Val di Noto

Noto is a town located in the south of Sicily. The town was rebuilt after an earthquake and has become the symbol of the rebirth of the Baroque style.
In addition to Noto, other towns such as Caltagirone, Catania, Modica and Ragusa were also rebuilt according to the canons of the Baroque.
The Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto are an essential stop on your Sicilian tour.

6. The sea

We can safely say that the Sicilian sea is wonderful. If you want to relax and tan before returning to work, you are in the right place.
The Sicilian bathing establishments offer you everything you need.
I recommend the marine areas of Mazara del Vallo, the Zingaro Reserve, Cefalù, Ustica, Giardini Naxos and Taormina.
Beaches, lidos and coves will be all you need during all your Sicilian holidays!

7. The muds of Vulcano

If you want to live a different experience, outdoors and with a sea view, then the mud of Vulcano is for you.
I recommend that you bring an old costume with you and immerse yourself in the thermal sulfur that will help you have glowing skin.
And it’s completely free. The only flaw is that your skin will “smell” of sulfur.

8. The thermal baths of Segesta

If you are looking for a place to recreate yourself in body and mind then go there.
The Segesta thermal baths are located only 10 km from Segesta.
Here, after the Roman Empire, a “castle of the baths” was built and the Arabs loved to bathe where the water reaches a temperature of about 47 degrees.

9. The Sicilian Sistine Chapel

In San Domenico a Castelvetrano, in the province of Trapani you will find a wonderful chapel.
The chapel was built in 1470 in the style known as Mannerism.
Prepare your camera to capture the details of the Jesse tree that would represent the genealogy of Jesus. The late Gothic church was used as a mausoleum of the Aragona – Tagliavia family and was used for private ceremonies.
Here you will find frescoes, Gothic, Bourbon and Baroque art in the different chapels inside.

10. Just another little tip

Sicily by Peter H – Pixabay

Sicily is a region full of traditions and folklore. Once there, you must visit different towns to understand their world of beliefs and legends. In other words, you will find special days where the “siciliani” people remember something. In the town known as Modica on the 25th or 26th of January, it is said that a song originates from the sea, that can predict the future of those who can listen to it. Speaking of festivities, I must mention the ride of the “Giant and the Gigantesca” which takes place in Messina on August 15th. Without forgetting the “Procession of the Vara”, a parade of a pyramidal construction adorned with images of angels and statues of saints at the top.

Something more about Sicily

The Sicilian island is the largest in Italy and is made up of a set of archipelagos and smaller islands.
The main groups of islands are the Egadi, the Aeolian Islands, the Pelagie Islands. Without forgetting the Ciclopi and Stagnone islands.
The volcanoes Etna, Vulcano and Stromboli are located in Sicily and are the landmarks of the entire region. Moreover,  people like to photograph them during their activity phases especially during the night. Don’t miss this activity once there
