Top 10 Facts about the Amalfi Coast

This wonderful place is characterized by unforgettable places and orange blossoms and lemons. Mediterranean green areas and wonderful beaches are also main attractions.
This enchanted place was declared a “World Heritage Site” by Unesco only in 1997.
As a result, I always recommend a holiday there.
In this way, it will be possible to admire the landscape and sunbathe.
Without forgetting to taste the typical foods of the area!
You cannot leave without first tasting the artisanal limoncello.
Meanwhile, let’s see together the top 10 facts about the Amalfi Coast.
You will want to pack your bags!

1. The dimensions of the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast extends over 11,332 hectares of land approximately exactly between the Gulf of Naples and the Gulf of Salerno.
The municipalities that compose it are 14, namely: Agerola, Atrani, Amalfi, Cetara, Conca dei Marini, Maiori and Minori, Furore, Praiano, Positano, Ravello, Scala, Vietri sul mare, Tramonti.

The villages are all connected by the Amalfi State Road n. 163

2. Amalfi

The entire coast takes its name from the town of Amalfi.
Besides, is the first of the four maritime republics if you remember!
During history, it was famous for being the best in maritime and commercial traffic, thanks to the connections with the East.

3. Who invented Limoncello?

Capri, Sorrento and Amalfi have a small dispute.
It is generally believed that the town of Sorrento invented the delicious Limoncello.
While the beautiful Capri claims it was her. And even Amalfi does!
However, we don’t care. And we continue to taste the nectar of lemons known as “Sfusato di Amalfi” or “Ovale di Sorrento”.
Here, Limoncello is used as a digestive to top off a lavish meal. Limoncello is made with citrus peel and juice.
Its preparation is very simple but you have to be careful.
You will need pure alcohol, untreated lemons, water and sugar.
Simple isn’t it?

4. The town of Positano

Legend has it that the city of Positano was created by Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea.
Poseidon created the city to ingratiate himself with the beautiful Pasithea.
Later it was the Romans who made it expand and grow. Until the arrival of the pirates who attacked the coasts and plundered.
In fact, along the coast, you will find 30 towers that were built starting from 1600 to signal their arrival. They still use a common saying referred to them: “behave or the Turks will take you away!”

5. The romantic gardens in Ravello

Instead, the beautiful Ravello is known for its wonderful and romantic gardens.
Once there you can admire the gardens of Villa Rufolo.
According to legend, Wagner inspired by the gardens composed the work known as “Parsifal”.
The writer Vidal also declared the immense beauty of the gardens.
I advise you to take a nice walk in Ravello and take some time to stroll in the garden.

6. The smallest square in Italy

Yes, exactly.
Once there you can admire the smallest pizza in Italy.
Where is it? Obviously in Atrani.
The town, if we want to call it that, has been included in the most beautiful villages to visit in Italy and is a World Heritage Site according to Unesco.
It also holds the record for the smallest municipality by area.
That is, it measures just one square kilometre. The village has wonderful medieval architecture and a lovely beach.
You will notice the presence of a steep rocky wall that surrounds almost the entire town. It gives a beautiful image. It’s a jewel! Furthermore, the village is located a short distance from Amalfi.
You can easily reach it on foot.
Don’t forget to admire the Masaniello Grotto.

7.  Only 20 years

I’m not giving the numbers for Bingo. 20 years is the time it took to build the road that connects Sorrento to Amalfi.
In reality, the road was built in ancient times by the Romans and today it has become the state road 163 that I mentioned earlier.
Its track has many curves and has only one lane.
Along the way, you will find many kiosks where you can stop and feed or drink a limoncello.
You will also find many delicacies to buy and bring back to friends and relatives. Don’t miss them! They are a must!

8. Wonder Woman

The film released in cinemas in 2017 was shot along the Amalfi coast.
That’s right. That’s right.
Some scenes that brought back the Amazon rainforest were shot near the coast and some at Ravello. The Villa Cimbrone was the place where they also shot other wonderful scenes.
What is certain is that it is difficult to recognize because of the special effects they used in the film.
But you can see for yourself the places where Gal Gadot shot scenes.
Nice isn’t it? And if you want to try something different you can sleep inside the Villa itself.
Cool!

9. There are no trains along the coast

If you are planning your trip along the Amalfi Coast then I recommend that you rent a car.
As there are no trains that can take you from one town to another.
If you want to make it easier, do so! Otherwise, you will have to look for a place to rent bicycles.
You should know that nowhere can you leave your car without paying for parking.
This will make your stay there more expensive. Alternatively, you can try ferries and boats to move from one place to another.

10. Beaches

Some municipalities have free or private beaches where you can swim and sunbathe.
You should know that other municipalities instead arise on the coast and do not have direct access to the beach.
What there are, however, are real earthly paradises to admire and where to relax and sunbathe.
Some are characterized by pebbles while Vietri Sul Mare instead has sandy beaches.

11. Food

Once there don’t forget to taste the fantastic pizza they have. And don’t lose your time, you’ll need to eat the fantastic Caprese dish with handmade mozzarella bites. And always top it off with some fantastic Limoncello!
